Rep. Israel Calls for Renewing Plastic Gun Ban

A Long Island congressman is urging the renewal of a federal ban on plastic guns that are just as deadly but don?t set off metal detectors.

Rep. Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) cited the new possibility of building plastic guns at home using 3-D printers, potentially putting the public at risk. Although printing all of the parts to make a gun at home isn?t currently feasible, he said the technology is advancing to the point that homemade plastic guns could soon become a reality.

?We should act now to give law enforcement authorities the power to stop the development of these weapons before they are as easy to come by as a Google search,? he said.

Plastic guns are illegal under the Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988, which is set to expire in the New Year.

Israel is announcing the legislation to renew the ban at?a?Friday news conference at the security scanners at Long Island McArthur Airport.
