The year's coming to an end, but the impact of the storm is not. The New York State Labor Department reports a loss of 30,000 jobs in and around the city this November due to Hurricane Sandy.
James Brown, an economist for the Labor Department, told City Room that during the end-of-year holiday season -- traditionally the busiest, most profitable time of the year for restaurants -- the leisure and hospitality sector has instead lost around 8,500 jobs.
This sector includes the restaurant industry, along with performing arts, museums, and historical sites.
Brown pointed to restaurant closings and layoffs in hard-hit neighborhoods (where many restaurants have still not reopened), but also to a less covered issue: Workers relocated from their damaged offices in lower Manhattan have meant far less business for caterers and corporate cafeterias.
