11 Tips On How To Declutter Your Desk | Self improvement tips ...

Several years ago before I became a professional organizer I was talking to another organizer and she was apologizing for not calling me back, she had misplaced my phone number on her desk. I laughed and said I didn?t know organizers ever had paper clutter/cluttered desks. I was only partially joking and I have had to eat those words this past month.

I am now on a roll. I have been organizing everything in my home that wasn?t organized. It sure does feel good. But I know that to stay organized I have to keep up on general clutter including paper clutter every day. Every time I use something or get something out?like a book, clothes or putting the laundry away I need to put the items back where they belong as soon as I am through with them. To actually stay organized and not get lost in paper clutter it is a constant effort, but doing it a little at a time doesn?t make it seem like organizing.

My desk has been an office armoire. Now I have a desk top with more room to spread out. I started to spread out when my daughter and son-in-law gave me their old desk. I started tossing things on top instead of taking care of them at the time I had whatever it was in my hands.

I like drawers that I can put things in and this has been a challenge since this is just a table top desk. I solved this organizing problem by using a filing cabinet drawer that is next to my desk to organize my paper work. I have separated the paper just like I would if I had drawers where I could lay down my paper work. I used hanging folders with labeled manila envelopes to separate my projects. This has eliminated a lot of paper clutter.

I could purchase a metal separating file to put my paperwork in but I chose not to. This would be very good for someone who likes to pile papers.

How to declutter my collection of pen? I am using a mug to hold pens. My computer screen was too low so I used a book to prop it up. But I don?t like looking at the book so I put a card I like in front of it. It

will work until I get something different for the screen to sit on.

I do a lot of writing so I decided I would treat myself with flowers on my desk because they make me feel special and happy.

I broke my cardinal rule; I was taking notes of things I had to do on little pieces of paper. I was converted years ago to not doing this. I don?t know what got in to me! I was misplacing phone numbers, appointments, and other important things. I know better than to do this. I shaped up and every note I had taken if it was important I put in my planner. I made a master to do list in my planner and then I wrote the activities on different days that I thought I could accomplish that task. This along helped with paper clutter pile up.

I had been looking over my tax file and instead of filing it away when I was finished I just left it on the desk. It was one more thing adding to the clutter. It is hard for me to work when there is general clutter and paper clutter on my desk, my mind wanders so I spent over an hour getting it organized one evening. What a waste of time, if I would have just kept up with it I wouldn?t have had such a large project.

To keep general clutter and paper clutter from living on your desk, designate a place for all paper work. As much as possible only handle it once. Make a decision where to put it the first time and put it there. Create a filing system that works for you. Designate a container for an in box so when others put things on your desk they know where to place it.

An organized desk saves the time and frustration of missing appointments, not being able to find important information and the cost of not being as productive.

Israel to seize Jerusalem village land to construct wall

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities issued notices on Friday to annex 456 dunams of land from a Jerusalem village in order to build part of its separation wall, local officials said.

Head of Beit Iksa village council Kamal Hababa said villagers were shocked when they saw the notices detailing plans to seize agricultural land, officials news agency Wafa reported.

The notices invited residents to participate in a tour with Israeli military officers along the proposed route of the barrier, Hababa said, adding that villagers refused to take part and vowed to confront soldiers if they come to the village.

The wall, when finished, will surround the village on all sides and annex around 12,000 dunams of agricultural land used for growing olive trees and grape vineyards.

Beit Iksa's 2,000 residents will be left with only 300 dunams of land for natural growth and will be separated from Jerusalem and isolated from the rest of the West Bank, Jerusalem governorate official Muhammad Tari said.

Beit Iksa village is located in Area B but is physically isolated from surrounding areas, with residents having to cross a checkpoint to access the West Bank.

The village is located directly opposite the illegal Ramot Allon settlement, which is considered part of Jerusalem by Israel but is illegal under international law.

SARASOTA, Fla.?Picture walking down a path that takes you past beautiful banyan trees toward a Venetian Gothic-style building. Palm fronds, mossy oaks, and the feather grass blow in the warm breeze coming off Sarasota Bay, and you have a whole day to explore.

These are the grounds of the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla., built by John and Mable Ringling, of Ringling Brothers circus fame. This is also home to John and Mable Ringling?s incredible mansion, the circus museum, the Asolo Theatre, and Mabel Ringling?s Rose Garden.

\>");

The couple were great admirers of Venetian architecture and inspired by extensive travel in Europe, they dreamed up their winter home away from their New York apartment on Park Avenue. ?Mable had an oilskin portfolio filled with postcards, sketches, photos and other materials that she gathered on her travels to aid the architect with his design,? notes the Ringling website.

The Ringlings bought 20 acres of land on the waterfront and started construction of their mansion, Ca? d?Zan (literally the ?House of John? in the Venetian dialect), at the beginning of 1924. It cost $1.5 million, according to the website, and was completed just before Christmas in 1925. At the height of John?s career, the couple started collecting fine European art, old masterworks, and sculptures.

Reflecting ?the last of the Gilded Age mansions to be built in America,? the mansion evokes a Venetian palace, like the grand Doge?s Palace or Gothic C? d?Oro, with Sarasota Bay serving as its canal, according to the website.

The Ringling Museum

Within this palace of treasures are paintings and sculptures by the great old masters, including Rubens, Titian, van Dyck, Tintoretto, Vel?zquez, Veronese, El Greco, and Gainsborough.

Ringling pushed through a number of devastating tribulations to complete the art museum. After construction began in 1927, the stock market crashed, and his wife Mable died young, in 1929. Instead of giving up his dream, he borrowed money to finish it, knowing it would immortalize his beloved?s memory. The museum opened to the public in 1931.

But it was never smooth sailing for the museum. Ringling bequeathed his art collection and property to the people of Florida when he died in 1936 at age 70. Unfortunately, the state had to battle with creditors over the estate, and it wasn?t until 1946 when it was finally in the hands of Florida. But it wasn?t managed well, and the lack of funds made the problems overwhelming.

By the late 1990s, the museum was a dilapidated shadow of its former glory.

?Governance was transferred from ? Florida?s Department of State to Florida State University, establishing the Ringling estate as one of the largest museum-university complexes in the nation. As part of the University, the Museum has experienced a rebirth,? according to the website.

In 2007, endowed with tens of millions in government funds, donations, and pledges, the entire estate was restored and expanded.

The original grand hall was built especially for John Ringling?s large-scale pi?ces de r?sistance, four Peter Paul Rubens Italian baroque tapestries titled ?The Triumph of the Eucharist.? ?

?The Triumph of the Eucharist? is a collection of 11 large tapestries commissioned by Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia, daughter of Phillip II of Spain, in 1625. The four in the Ringling museum are the only ones in America. ?

At the Symposium on Rubens?s ?Triumph of the Eucharist? series, Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, pointed out that at the time when John Ringling purchased the tapestries in 1926, Americans weren?t especially partial to Rubens because of his allegiance to the Roman Catholic Church and because the women he painted were plump. ?

?A stereotyped, but much exaggerated reproach against Rubens is, that in historical and sacred subjects, he takes for models of female figures his heavy muscular countrywomen,? wrote the American George Henry Calvert in his book about Rubens titled ?The Life of Rubens.? ?

Ringling, however, was fond of European art and in present times, the paintings are viewed as treasures. ?

Reflecting his finesse and passion for the art, Ringling picked certain features in paintings and decorated some of the rooms of the museum to match, giving context for the historic details and intricate brushwork. For instance, he placed replicas of the columns in one of Rubens?s paintings in the room, creating another dimension to the entire experience.

Worth noting is that Flemish-born Rubens traveled to Venice to study the works of the Venetian Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese, who is the focus of a major exhibition currently showing at the museum.?

Paolo Veronese Exhibit

The exhibit Paolo Veronese: A Master and His Workshop in Renaissance Venice, opened on Dec. 7 and is on view through April 14. The artist holds special significance for the museum, as one of the highlight works, Veronese?s ?Rest on the Flight into Egypt,? was John Ringling?s first-ever purchase of an old master painting.

Veronese elegantly captured 16th-century Venetian society in all its glory. He?s also famous for his ceiling paintings and Biblical feast scenes. ?

Marco Boschini, an Italian art historian, said regarding Veronese in his book ?The Map of Painting?s Journey?: ?Certainly never has been seen among painters such regal pomp and circumstance, such majestic actions, such weighty and decorous manner! He is the treasurer of the art and of the colors. This is not painting, it is magic that casts a spell on people who see it.? ?

Veronese was very successful and needed a workshop of staff, pupils, and assistants, who painted the backgrounds of major works, to keep up with demand.

The full exhibit pulls together 75 paintings and drawings, many loaned from the National Gallery of Art, Washington; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Harvard Art Museums; the Cleveland Museum of Art; the J. Paul Getty Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Morgan Library and Museum; the Blanton Museum of Art; and many other museums and private lenders.

Other Noteworthy Art

Ringling was also interested in Asian art, and another exhibit, open until July, showcases Chinese ceramics. The Mythical Creatures exhibit delves into the animal symbolism that is so important in ancient Chinese culture and includes dragons, lions, phoenixes, monkeys, and elephants.

Other noteworthy paintings include the ?Blue Madonna,? by Carlo Dolci, and Diego Velasquez?s ?Philip IV,? among many others.

Don?t forget to step out into the courtyard where a life-size bronze replica of Florence?s famous David statue by Michelangelo stands, as well as two fountains??Fountain of Tortoises,? one of three replicas from the Piazza Mattei in Rome, and the ?Oceanus Fountain,? copied from the 16th-century original by Giovanni Bologna in Florence?s Boboli Gardens.

The courtyard is the perfect complement to the museum and the whole Venetian atmosphere of the Ringling estate. Enjoy a breath of fresh air, a rest, or take some time to reflect on the Ringling museum experience while overlooking the bay.? ?

Planning a kid-friendly New Year's Eve | Wichita Eagle

How do you make a New Year?s party that the whole family can enjoy?

For years, I barely acknowledged New Year?s Eve to my three kids so they wouldn?t know they were missing anything. I either went to some flashy grownup event or skipped it and went to bed. In the morning, I explained about the date change.

Last year, though, our family attended a party at a friend?s, and it was genuinely heartwarming. I began to think it was worth making an effort to mark the holiday, together, at home.

New Year?s is not just for adults. A small party is doable and relaxing; think about inviting extended family or close friends and their children.

?Parents feel more comfortable with their kids around,? says Selvi Rudge, a mother of three in Larchmont, N.Y., who often invites friends and kids for New Year?s. ?And having the kids there just makes the celebration better.?

Preparing with some simple crafting and cooking projects can make everyone feel part of the holiday.

1. New Year?s poster. Take an 18-by-24-inch poster board and label it ?What I want to do in 2013.? It can be simple, with a lot of room to write, or it can be decorated by kids who know their way around a poster board. Tape it up somewhere central ? I like the refrigerator ? and keep washable markers nearby. Write in an entry or two, whether resolution-like (?I want to take up jogging?) or wishful thinking (?I want to explore the Amazon?). The poster can be a family project or it can be opened up to guests as a sort of guest book.

2. Table top. Table decor can be kid-constructed and reusable, and it does not have to look childlike or chaotic. A great idea from Sabrina James, style director at Parenting Magazine, is to paint inexpensive plastic chargers (the larger plates that go under dinner plates) with black chalkboard paint, then have the kids decorate the plates with white chalk. They can draw stars or write guests? names or ?2013? ? even toddlers can scribble. ?It all stays black and white, it still looks sophisticated, and the kids have a hand in decorating the table,? says James.

3. Making some noise. Of course there must be noisemakers. James suggests this fresh take: Paint small, empty raisin boxes with silver or gold paint ? spray paint is easiest ? and then decorate them with small gems or sequins. Fill the boxes with dry pasta or rice, and tape a Popsicle stick to the back. The noisemakers can sit in vases around the table. Kids will be proud of their contributions, and you?ll be happy to have them as attractive table decorations.

4. Food. To avoid holiday feast fatigue, a New Year?s feast should consist of foods the family actually likes. You?re not tied to tradition, so focus on old family favorites, or on foods that some cultures say bring good luck. According to Epicurious.com, cooked greens symbolize money and good fortune; pork means prosperity. Don?t eat anything that moves backwards, like lobster. My teenage daughter likes to bake a holiday cake and get creative with frosting. Baking infuses the air with cheer and allows kids to participate. Limit how many sprinkles or frosting colors you offer; adult guests don?t always enjoy a crunchy inch-thick layer of purple sugar.

5. After-meal activity. Karaoke is a new tradition for our family; we learned it from the friends who held last year?s party. Systems range in price from less than $100 to more than $1,000, and can be rented, too. Whether you rock the oldies or attempt to rap, the kids are just as entertained as the adults. And they will want their turn, so make sure your song list includes some current hits or favorites they know.

Finally, do you or don?t you keep the kids up till midnight? Go for it, but be prepared to send them to bed or say good night early if they fall apart.

And they may. But the karaoke, other kids and special treats may keep them fueled and happy enough to see the ball drop. And then you will have another family memory tucked away, and maybe another entry for the 2013 poster: I want the whole family to ring in the new year together again in 2014.

How To Raise Revenue And Cut Childhood Obesity In One Fell ...

From Your Health Journal?..?The Washington Post is an excellent resource on all topics, but I love their health related stories. I encourage all of you to visit their site (link below) to read this full article being reviewed here today, as well as other great articles. Today?s article discusses an option of how to cut obesity by banning food ads. Advertisements can have that ?glorifying? effect on people, especially children ? who see ads for products that may entice them to eat fatty or sugary processed foods. There are many groups who feel advertisements play a big role in contributing to the obesity epidemic. Basically, kids see an ad, go to the supermarket and want this product ? maybe because the ad made the unhealthy food seem very appealing to eat, or simply because it comes with a prize. Now, on the other hand, there are some who feel all this in nonsense, as parents need to step up and show discipline ? and use the word ?no? when a child asks for a food product that may not be healthy. Then, there is another group who say buy the products, but moderate how much they eat, so it is not on a regular basis. Which side do you take? Would love to know, so post away here. Please visit the Washington Post web site to view the full article.?

From the article?..

It should come as no surprise to anyone with a television that advertising for fast food joints and snack foods can be mighty persuasive. A new working paper by public health economists Michael Grossman, Roy Wada, and Erdal Tekin tries to quantify exactly how persuasive, and what this means for public health.

Previous studies have mainly focused on the persuasiveness of junk food advertising to children. Not too surprisingly, the previous literature found that kids were pretty impressionable. One study found that watching 100 ads for soft drinks over a three-year period was associated to a 9.4 percent increase in soda consumption. Another, coauthored by Grossman, found that banning fast food advertising would reduce childhood obesity by 10 percent.

The new paper reproduces Grossman?s earlier calculations and reaches very similar conclusions. What?s more, it finds that banning fast food ads reduces obesity when measured using percent body fat (PBF), which many experts consider a better metric to body-mass index (BMI), upon which Grossman?s earlier study relied. Using PBF, the effects of an advertising ban are even larger. A PBF-based calculation suggests that a ban would reduce the number of obese youths by 14 percent, while Grossman et al?s most recent BMI-based calculation found a reduction of only 6 percent.

Email Outperforms Social Media | Daily Deal Media

marketingEmail, not social media, still reigns supreme as the top marketing tool for business owners.

Even retailers as different as?Williams-Sonoma?and?Home Depot?have taken on the task of sending out customer specific emails, rather than the one-size-fits-all blasts that once dominated this type of marketing.

If sales are measured by per dollar spent, email outperforms social-media advertising 3-to-1, says the?Direct Marketing Association, a trade group founded to provide accurate marketing data. That explains why retailers will send 19 percent more emails this year.

Compared with social-media, email marketing will never be sexy, said Ted Wham, a vice president of?Responsys, a San Bruno, Calif., firm that helps companies build digital relationships with customers.

?But it depends on what?s sexy to you,? he said. ?In my opinion, making a high profit rate and bringing in a lot of incremental dollars is very sexy.?

Competition was fierce this holiday shopping season as the?National Retail Federation?predicted sales would rise 4.1 percent to about $586.1 billion in the period, compared with a 5.6 percent increase in 2011. Online sales may grow to a record $43.4 billion in the last two months of the year, a 17 percent increase from last year, ComScore says.

The number of Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers making purchases after clicking through from social networks such as?Facebook,?Twitter,?LinkedIn?and?YouTube?declined by at least 26 to 10 percent this year from 2011, even as online sales soared, IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark said last month. So-called social sales contributed less than 0.5 percent of online revenue both days.

Major retailers are on track to send subscribers an average of 211 promotional emails in 2012 compared with 177 last year, Responsys says.

Email provided $39.40 in sales per dollar of advertising this year, followed by $22.38 through Web search, $19.71 from Internet display ads and $12.90 from social networks, the Direct Marketing Association said.

Canada-U.S. matchup at world juniors carries plenty of subplots

UFA, Russia ? Ty Rattie is going to keep watching NBA games with his Portland Winterhawks teammate Seth Jones.

The Canadian forward and the American defenceman billet at the same home in Portland, Oregon.

Jones?s father, Ronald (Popeye) Jones, is a former NBA player now assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets.

?Popeye has me decked out in Brooklyn Nets stuff,? Rattie says. ?I?m not a huge basketball fan, but I want to fit in. I want to get Popeye?s approval and keep getting free clothes.?

The intersection of junior hockey and NBA basketball is one of numerous subplots when Canada faces the United States at the world junior hockey championship Sunday.

Canada?s final Pool B game versus Russia on Monday is anticipated because it pits two players chosen first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in consecutive NHL drafts ? Canada?s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Russia?s Nail Yakupov.

But a Canada-U.S. matchup is entertaining because of the multiple player connections and the familiarity between the two countries. Canada is 2-0 in its group, while the U.S. is 1-1 after a narrow 2-1 loss to host Russia.

?It?s going to be exciting for multiple reasons,? Rattie said. ?It being such a huge rivalry is another and guys knowing each other from different teams.?

Canada is going to be one heck of an opponent. They?re a talented team and we?re a very talented team. We have all the elements to win a gold medal here

U.S. goaltender John Gibson is Canadian head coach Steve Spott?s goalie with the Kitchener Rangers.

?I?m the president of the John Gibson fan club, but I won?t be tomorrow night,? Spott said.

Gibson is one of 11 Canadian Hockey League players on the U.S. team, coached by former NHL defenceman Phil Housley.

The game will also showcase three players whose names will be called early at the next NHL entry draft.

In addition to Jones, an athletic six-foot-three, 205-pound defenceman, Canadian forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin of the Halifax Mooseheads are top prospects as well.

?It should be fun,? says MacKinnon says of facing Jones. ?I don?t know how much I?m going to play against him.?

Jones will likely be pitted against Canada?s top line of Nugent-Hopkins, the tournament points leader, and wingers Mark Scheifele and Jonathan Huberdeau.

MacKinnon, 17, plays centre on the fourth line, although Canada?s forward lines will be fluid against the Americans because J.C. Lipon and Boone Jenner will serve out suspensions.

MacKinnon has played against Jones before when his Atlantic team faced the United States at the 2011 under-17 world challenge.

?I don?t like to talk about it too much,? MacKinnon said of his team?s 12-1 loss in Winnipeg.

Jones says he?s aware he?ll be closely monitored by NHL scouts at Ufa Arena, but he?s more concerned about defending the Nugent-Hopkins line.

?That line is tremendous,? Jones said. ?They have a lot of speed and a lot of skill. So you just have to try and take away their time and space as much as possible down low and really push them to make plays.?

Jones says he chose hockey over basketball because at age seven, he was in Denver?s Pepsi Centre when the Colorado Avalanche won Game 7 of the 2001 Stanley Cup final.

?That in itself just kind of did it for me,? Jones said. ?The energy in the arena was electric and Ray Bourque?s first Stanley Cup was a memorable moment.?

The U.S. beat Canada in overtime to take gold at the 2010 world junior championship in Saskatoon. But the Americans fell into the relegation pool in 2012 in Calgary and Edmonton and ended up seventh.

?That?s unacceptable and this year we have high hopes,? said captain Jake McCabe.

?Canada is going to be one heck of an opponent. They?re a talented team and we?re a very talented team. We have all the elements to win a gold medal here.?

Also, Spott gave Brett Ritchie the day off from practice Saturday. The coach said the second-line winger wasn?t injured, but needed the day off ?for maintenance.?

Toyota acceleration settlement gets preliminary OK

(AP) ? A U.S. judge gave preliminary approval Friday to a $1 billion-plus settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. in cases involving problems of sudden, unintended acceleration by its vehicles, a plaintiffs' attorney said.

Attorney Steve Berman said in a statement he was pleased District Judge James V. Selna gave swift initial approval.

Toyota has said the deal, announced Wednesday, will resolve hundreds of lawsuits from motorists who said the value of their Toyota vehicles plummeted after recalls stemming from claims that the Japanese automaker's cars and trucks accelerated unintentionally.

The preliminary approval means current and former Toyota owners included in the settlement will receive information through notices expected to be mailed in early March. Information about the settlement will also be published in newspapers around the country.

Selna plans to hold a fairness hearing June 13 to consider granting final approval.

Numerous cases filed since 2009 were consolidated in Selna's court and divided into two categories: economic loss and wrongful death. Claims by people who seek compensation for injury and death due to sudden acceleration are not part of the settlement; the first trial involving those suits is scheduled for February.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide due to acceleration problems in several models and brake defects with the Prius hybrid.

Toyota, which has blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and stuck accelerator pedals for the problems, plans to take a one-time, $1.1 billion pre-tax charge against earnings to cover the estimated costs of the settlement. Berman has said the total value of the deal is between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion.

Toyota plans to offer cash payments from a pool of about $250 million to eligible customers who sold vehicles or turned in leased vehicles between September 2009 and December 2010. The company also will provide supplemental warranty coverage for certain vehicle components and retrofit about 3.2 million vehicles with a brake override system designed to ensure a car will stop when the brakes are applied, even if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

The settlement would also establish additional driver education programs and fund new research into advanced safety technologies.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NHL and the players' association are spending lots of time talking, but not negotiating yet.

One day after it was revealed that the NHL made a new contract offer to the union, the sides spent much of Saturday taking part in conference calls. The talks were strictly on an informational level and not meant for bargaining purposes. The thought is that the sides are looking to meet for traditional negotiating on Sunday in New York, but that hadn't been scheduled as of Saturday afternoon.

The players' association has been going over the new proposal it received late Thursday. Calls were scheduled for Saturday so the union could ask questions of league officials regarding the offer that is about 300 pages in length.

Whether enough progress will be made to lead to face-to-face talks remains to be seen. So far, only more informational sessions have been scheduled for Sunday morning.

The sides haven't gotten together in person since Dec. 13 with federal mediators.

Karen S. Exkorn: Five Tips On How To Say The Right Thing All (Or At Least Most) The Time

Say What You Mean, Mean What You...What'd You Say?

You know how sometimes you use an expression without thinking about its meaning? I did just that recently, and it came back to haunt me.

I'd written a fun and upbeat article about "Happy Holiday Sex." It included sexy tips and a sentence about how dealing with sugar-crazed kids or dysfunctional family members "does not necessarily put you in the mood...unless that mood involves killing someone."

I'd written that article many weeks ago. The article was published just days after the Newtown tragedy.

Upon re-reading it, I honestly hadn't remembered writing that line. It was a throwaway line, an attempt at light-hearted humor. But my heart grew heavy as I read it. I quickly contacted the publisher, who just as quickly deleted the line.

That's when I started to assess my use of language -- specifically those expressions I'd come to use everyday without even thinking about them. I heard myself saying things like, "I'd die if I ever wore something like that!" or "That joke kills me!" Even using the word "deadline" started to bother me.

Meanwhile, I'd spent years as a management consultant, coaching executives on the importance of finding just the right words or expressions to use in their keynote speeches or business pitches. I'd emphasized the weight that a single word holds. Words have power, and the power of one word can mean the difference between a positive or negative audience reaction. It can also mean the difference between the making or breaking of a business deal, or even a relationship.

Five Tips on How To Say the Right Thing All (or at least most) of the Time

Mirror Mirror
Observe yourself. Your words define who you are and how you are seen in the world. What expressions do you use on a daily basis? Are you using "loaded" words or expressions that really don't represent who you are? My teenage son Jake pointed out that I constantly used the expression, "It is what it is." He said, "Mom, it doesn't sound like you. It sounds kind of negative." I realized that he was right, and I'm making a conscious effort to stop saying it. Remember, people judge you by the words you use. Be mindful of what you're saying.

Think First. Speak Second.
Words can help. And words can hurt. Even though spoken words seem to disappear into the air, they can have a way of landing inside someone's heart and remaining there for a very long time. When you're feeling a positive emotional charge, it might be okay to shout out, "I love you!" but when you're feeling a negative emotional charge (i.e. in the heat of the moment during a fight with a loved one), it might not be okay to shout out, "I hate you!" The best advice a marriage counselor ever gave my husband and me was to "Think before you speak," especially during a highly emotionally charged situation.

Let Your Body Talk -- or Shout!
Your body speaks louder than your words when you're communicating in person. Oh sure, you can use words to tell someone that you care, but if your arms are crossed in front of your chest and your eyes are trying to peer over his shoulder to see what's on TV, then your words are the equivalent of what you'd scoop up in the dog park. This happens quite often in the business world. Everyone is multi-tasking to the point where when an employee tries to share an idea and others are tweeting and texting and adding empty "Uh huh's," that idea is never received, and the employee feels like the equivalent of that dog park pick-up. So, make sure that you use open body language (arms uncrossed and eye contact) to express your ideas or show that you're openly listening.

Talk to Yourself
Be aware of the words you use when you're talking to yourself. Psychologists have done studies on the effect of self-talk and its powerful effect on the unconscious. If you're constantly saying to yourself, "I'm so stupid" or "I can't believe I just said such a dumb thing," then you probably will continue to say and do dumb things. It's self-fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, if you constantly say to yourself, "I'm so smart" and "I just came up with a brilliant idea!" then you will probably continue to do and say smart and brilliant things. Studies also show that even if you don't actually believe that you're all that smart, by constantly telling yourself that you are, you will be!

Say EEEE.
Say "EEEE." Notice what happens to your mouth. It actually pulls up the corners of your mouth so that you're smiling. A New York Times article entitled "A Language of Smiles" by Olivia Judson () states that "The mere act of smiling is often enough to lift your mood...(and) influence your emotional state." Think of the words that causes you to smile; they use the "EEEE" sound -- "happy," "glee," "sunny," "silly," me." If you can incorporate "EEEE" words that connote positive feelings and use those words, you will enhance both your own mood and the mood of your listener.

Just remember, what you say matters -- whether it's to yourself or others. Communicating with the right words can mean a world of difference about how you feel about yourself, and the way you are perceived by others. What if you make a mistake and say the wrong thing? There's always the option to use those powerful, magic words, "I'm sorry." And if you write the wrong thing? Well, as I learned, there's always the option of speaking up and using that magic "delete" key.

Social media and pr - UK Business Forums

Our distribution is in musical instruments and accessories.

We want to utilise social media to promote the products we distribute to muscicians so in turn the dealers get feedback and possible sales.

What im unclear about is with our facebook and twitter pages, do we hand over the username and password to the PR company for them to post on our behalf and try to attract not only more fans anf followers but more interest and possible sales for our dealers or does the PR company basically tell US what to post, how to post what images work, what engagment to have ect.

Its just an area im unclear with as I dont really know what a PR company does regarding a social media campaign.

Any examples of what they do would be great and if they (the pr) do it or if we do from what they suggest to us.

Japan voters back new PM cabinet, economy top priority

TOKYO (Reuters) - More than half of Japanese voters support new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet, media surveys published on Friday showed, with the country's stagnant economy topping the list of problems voters want the hawkish new leader to tackle.

Abe took office on Wednesday, after his conservative Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) landslide election victory this month, promising to revive the world's third-biggest economy with bold monetary easing and big spending by the debt-laden government.

Support for Abe's cabinet, which is packed with allies who share his conservative views but leavened with some party rivals, ranged from 52 percent in a survey by the Mainichi newspaper to 65 percent in a poll by the Yomiuri newspaper.

Fixing the economy, now in its fourth recession since 2000, was voters' top priority. Forty-eight percent of voters in a survey by the Asahi newspaper put the economy as their first priority, compared with 11 percent who stressed security issues, which are also a key element of Abe's platform.

Abe, 58, wants to revise Japan's post-World War Two constitution limits on the military so Tokyo can play a bigger global security role, but only 32 percent of voters in the Asahi poll backed the move compared to 53 percent who opposed.

Voters were split over the LDP's post-Fukushima nuclear disaster energy policy, with 46 percent in favor of its plan to restart off-line nuclear reactors that are confirmed safe and 45 percent opposed, the Yomiuri said.

Abe, who quit abruptly in 2007 after a troubled year in office during which his early high support rates crumbled, is all too aware of the need to show results quickly ahead of a July election for parliament's powerful upper house.

The LDP and its smaller coalition partner won the two-thirds majority in the lower house that allows them to enact bills rejected by the upper chamber, where they lack a majority, but that process is cumbersome.

"We are getting firm support for our practical response," the Yomiuri quoted Shigeru Ishiba, the LDP's No.2 leader, as saying. "We must achieve results so that we can maintain this support."

Elizabeth Gregory: Aging Sperm? Not the World's End

Judith Shulevitz's recent New Republic essay on how later parenthood is "upending American society" claims that delaying kids could lead us down a rabbit hole of genetic decline. The piece gathers much of its energy from new studies suggesting that male sperm quality decays with age.

While female infertility is old news, issues with male fertility create a new cultural frisson. Apparently, genetic errors may be introduced into sperm every time they divide -- which is often. So the children of some older men may have issues, cognitive and physical, that the kids of younger men don't generally face (at least not due to their dad's contribution to their DNA).

There's a lot of emphasis on the word "may" in the New Republic piece, since most of the evidence it's based on is inconclusive. And there's a strong element of anecdote as well. Fertility catastrophizing is an ongoing sport. Here are some links to other fertility scaremongering pieces of the past few years that turned out to be not the big problems the headlines suggested: the ovarian reserve scare, the later-parenthood autism scare, and the childlessness scare. Earlier this month we had the low-birth-rate scare (which turns out to really be about young women delaying kids in order to establish themselves -- a time-lag effect).

In the case of new dads over 50, several studies do suggest that their kids may have a higher rate of schizophrenia (about 1 percent) than those of younger dads (about 0.25 percent), and there may be links to other ailments. Time, and more completed studies, will tell. The same is true of studies of the effects of fertility treatments like Clomid on both kids and moms, which the essay also raises as potentially devolutionary. The data is still in the gathering stages.

As there has been all along, there's reason to ask women and their doctors to think through their fertility options before turning to fertility tech and drugs. Firm data on rates of pregnancy in the late 30s and early 40s is scarce, because doctors can't mandate that a big group of people have unprotected sex constantly for the sake of an experiment. But one study indicates that most women not already known to have an endocrinal disorder or blockage will get pregnant without aid in their late 30s within two years. Many find two years too long a wait before seeking fertility boosters -- and certainly it's reasonable for women to get their hardware checked out early on in their fertility efforts, or even before they're ready to start trying for kids. But of the 580,000 kids born to women 35 and over in 2010, only 5 percent involved IVF (per CDC and SART 2010 data). We can't track how many involved Clomid or IUI. For more on rates of decline, click here.

Fertility treatments should be more regulated and tracked than they are. We know little about the long-term effects of the treatments we're using on a wide scale. But it's my opinion the presentation of data in this essay is questionable. Potential problems should be noted and discussed, but there's no basis for jumping to end-of-the-world conclusions. We are not falling off a fertility cliff.

Looking at the same question from the positive side, at least such hand wringing does open up discussion of these issues. Suggestions of declining quality of sperm among later dads shares out some of the weight that's been jammed on the shoulders of later moms in our fertility discourse.

Different from older moms' situation, however, these male fertility issues are addressable with relative ease. For women, IVF and egg donation involve injections of high doses of hormones with unknown long-term effects, huge expense for each attempt, and ethical questions over the use of poorer women's genetic material for the benefit of richer couples.

By comparison, for men worried about potential issues with their aging reproductive materials, arranging for sperm donation is a breeze. The cost is negligible, and no risky hormone injections are required. If you want familial DNA connections, there's the real option for many of using a nephew's sperm -- or that of a younger brother. Or, if you don't have such a handy relative, or it's not a real option given your family dynamic but you do hope to propagate your own DNA, you can push for further research around generation of new sperm cells from an individual's adult stem cells, skin cells or other tissue. If perfected, such advances could allow men (and, interestingly, women too!) to generate new sperm cells bearing their DNA. These would be free of the genetic errors that older sperm have, because they haven't divided as often. Some animal experiments along these lines have been successful.

The understanding that spermatic dynamism fades with time may surprise us for a few minutes. But viewed in wider context, it's not the end of the world, guys. Modern fertility is changing at lightning speed, and along with it the stratification of tasks based on gender. Many of our old-world assumptions are being upended. But for women, men, families, and society, the new options introduced by control of fertility are largely positive and open the way to ongoing positive cultural evolution.

Applicant-Initiated Interviews at Tuck School of Business | Stacy ...

Tuck School of BusinessDid you know that Dartmouth?s Tuck School of Business offers applicants the chance to initiate an interview with admissions? Unlike it?s peer schools, which typically maintain an invitation-only policy, Tuck?s Open Interview Policy means that any applicant who wants to visit the school and interview with the admissions committee may do so.

In a video message posted to the Tuck School website, Director of Admissions Dawna Clarke explains that interviews are so helpful for the admissions committee in order to assess those valuable interpersonal skills, team skills, leadership skills, and of course, communication skills.

Applicants want the opportunity to be heard, and Tuck is proud to be able to offer that opportunity to any applicant who requests it, Clarke says, noting that ?An interview really helps us get a sense of your personality and softer skills that are a little harder to assess on the basis of a written application.?

The interviews are with either second-year students or a member of the admissions committee, and applicants have the opportunity to sit in on a class, have lunch with a second-year student, tour the facilities, and participate in an information session with an AdCom member during their visit.

For applicants unable to visit Tuck and take advantage of the open interview option, Clarke says that they would need to briefly explain the reason on their application and wait for the admissions committee invitation to interview, which is issued after an initial review of a candidate?s application.

According to Tuck, on-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members and selected second-year students. Off-campus interviews are conducted by admissions committee members, admissions associates, or alumni interviewers. All interviews are evaluated equally, regardless of interviewer, location, or how initiated.

Applicants should note that with the exception of the January round, interviews must be completed by the published deadline for the round in which you are applying. Because the January round deadline is 1/3/13, the applicant-initiated interview deadline is January 31st.

AT&T to update Samsung Galaxy Note II with Multi-Window tomorrow

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Most US models of the Samsung Galaxy Note II have already been updated with Multi-Window -- a split-screen feature that allows users to view two apps at once -- but AT&T is the last of the four national powers that hasn't pushed the feature out to its customers. That will change tomorrow, as AT&T has confirmed to us in an email that it will roll out the new build over the air at some point during the day. We're happy that users won't have to rely on Samsung's proprietary Kies desktop software to update their devices, but minor downloads like this are typically facilitated OTA. There's no word on if the ROM will be pushed out in phases to minimalize the impact on AT&T's servers, but don't be terribly worried if you don't get notified right away. Continue below to read the carrier's official statement on the matter.

6 must-have foods and drinks for 2013 ? Eatocracy - CNN.com Blogs

Kate Krader (@kkrader on Twitter) is Food & Wine's restaurant editor. When she tells us where to find our culinary heart's desire, we listen up.

What do you want to be eating more of in 2013? Right now, in the midst of my post-holiday food hangover, my answer is ?nothing.? My follow-up answer is ?anything that?s associated with the word cleanse.? But I?ll get over that.

So I looked in the crystal ball we have lying around at Food & Wine in anticipation of moments like this, and I discovered five foods and one kind of drink that will be on fire in 2013. So get out your soup spoons and Sex on the Beach glasses.

Happy New Year everyone!
?
?
Wacky Ramen
It?s not like ramen joints haven't been popping up everywhere. But now, experts - who generally obsess over the broth - are throwing non-traditional ingredients into their ramen bowls. At Dassara in Brooklyn, chef Marc Giroux celebrates the borough?s Jewish heritage with Deli Ramen, filled with matzo balls and Montreal-style smoked pastrami. In Baltimore, at PABU, Ken Tominaga serves Michael?s Chicken Noodle Ramen (it?s named for his business partner, Michael Mina).

Rabbit
Last year, I promoted squirrel as the great new sustainable meat (thanks to chef Ren? Redzepi of Noma in Copenhagen for the idea). This year, in lieu of meat from trees, I?ll call out rabbit, on menus all over the place. SPQR in San Francisco makes a luscious rabbit roulade (if you?d rather eat rabbit at home, the recipe is in the new SPQR cookbook). Chicago?s The Purple Pig turns rabbit into salad with pickled beans and crispy capers; on the small plates menu at Contigo in Austin, rabbit livers are served over Anson Mills grits.

Genius Tacos
If you could eat only one food in 2013, tacos would be a good bet. For one thing, they?re ubiquitous. They?re also becoming increasingly creative. At Manhattan?s El Toro Blanco, chef Josh Capon adds chipotle queso to his roast-chicken tacos (he goes old school, too, with the seasoned ground beef?filled Escuela Vieja).

New York City?s Salvation Taco offers non-traditional braised lamb tacos in naan bread. Comal in Berkeley serves wood-grilled rock-cod tacos with spicy pickled cabbage and avocado aioli; at Copita in Sausalito, the tortillas are house-made for tacos like oyster mushroom with pickled onions and epazote. Copita also boasts that its entire lunch and dinner menus are gluten-free?something else you?ll see ever more of in 2013.

?
Pasta Everywhere
Right now, every chef?s favorite new toy is his or her pasta extruder (one chef likened it to the joy you got as a kid with your super-deluxe Play-Doh set). At Nellc?te in Chicago, chef Jared van Camp mills his own flour in-house daily and makes over a dozen fresh pastas. In St. Louis, Gerard Craft has become such a pasta expert at Pastaria that he?s even making alphabet pasta (the kind you usually see in canned soups). At Manhattan?s new L?Apicio, chef Gabe Thompson is tweaking classic sauces for his house pastas, like adding pepperoni slivers to linguine with clam sauce.

Chocolate Cake 2.0
If there?s anything I love more than a Cake Wreck, it?s a really great version of an old-school chocolate cake. Battersby in Brooklyn has a tiny dessert menu that includes a superb version of Black Forest Cake, with brandied cherries on top. The Bakery at Cakes & Ale in Decatur, Georgia, is serving Marble Blackout Cake: vanilla, citrus and chocolate marbled cake with chocolate buttercream. (That?s just one of its many excellent retooled classics?Hummingbird Cake is another.) And at Sugar and Plumm in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Blackout Cake is currently served as part of the "Earthquake in a Fishbowl." That earthquake also includes key lime pie; butterscotch pudding; vanilla, chocolate and salted caramel ice creams; and whipped cream. Wow.

?
Kitschy Cocktails
If there?s anything I love more than a great old-school chocolate cake, it?s a great tacky cocktail. In Manhattan, Mission Chinese Food just got its liquor license; one of the first drinks they?ll serve is Sex on the Beach. In Washington, DC, Firefly has a new drinks menu, and they?re bringing back that 1980s classic, the Cosmopolitan.
