BASKETBALL

Elks Hoop Shoot

At Madison, Annual Elks Hoop Shoot sponsored by the Skowhegan-Madison Lodge, Sunday, Jan. 6, Madison Memorial High School. Registration starts at 11:30 a.m., first contest starts at noon. Open to boys and girls ages 8 to 13, with two divisions. Winners will be determined by the number of successful free throws out of 25 attempts. BIATHLON

Sunday, Jan. 27

At Jefferson, cross country skiing and shooting race, for youth and adults 9 a.m.-2 p.m., at Hidden Valley Nature Center, mandatory shooting and gun safety clinic will be conducted 9-11 a.m., guns provided, ski clinic available before races and some ski equipment available by reservation. HOCKEY

Learn to Skate

At Brewer, Penobscot Ice Arena, Learn to Skate and Learn to Play hockey programs, on Saturdays, 16 weeks, $99 per skater, to register log onto www.brewerhockey.org and click on the registration link and follow the online instructions, all skaters also need to register with USA Hockey prior to registering with Brewer Youth Hockey, major credit card is needed register, birth certificates are required. Maine Games

At Brewer, registration for ninth Maine Games State Powerlifting Championships opens Jan. 1. Event is March 23, Brewer Auditorium, open to athletes 10 years and older. Random drug testing. SKIING

Racing program

At Hermon, Penobscot Valley Ski Club Alpine Racing Development Program for skiers ages 8-14, to improve ski technique and develop racing skills, Saturdays 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Hermon Mountain, January through February, racers encouraged to participate in 4-5 optional junior races on Sundays. Ski, snowboard programs

At Hermon, Penobscot Valley Ski Club and Hermon Mountain offering ski and snowboard lessons for adults and children of all abilities, programs consist of four lessons/lift tickets, lesson schedule: skiing for adults and teens Fridays at 6 p.m., snowboarding for adults and teens Fridays at 6 p.m., skiing and snowboarding for juniors ages 5-12 on Saturday or Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., and skiing for tots, ages 3-4, Saturdays at 9:30 a.m., rental equipment available at Hermon Mountain, first session Jan. 4, registration forms and more information at www.pvskiclub.org, deadline for registration for January sessions is Dec. 21, for info email Susan at srlancaster@roadrunner.com.

At Bangor, Bangor Parks and Recreation Department accepting registrations for Ski and Snowboard lessons at Hermon Mountain. Session 1 runs 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 8-19. Session 2 runs 4:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 5-March 5. Each session offers four one-hour lessons and up to an hour of free ski time. Transportation to and from the mountain is the responsibility of the participant. The cost is $75 Bangor residents, $85 others per session. Cross country ski program

At Bangor, Bangor Parks and Recreation Department will offer a cross-country ski program open to children in grades 3 through 8. The program will run 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 10-Feb. 28, at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course. The cost is $40 per person. Call 992-4490 or register at www.BangorParksandRec.com.

Discounted ski tickets

The Bangor Parks and Recreation Department is offering discount lift tickets for Sugarloaf Mountain. The tickets are good forJan. 19, only. Participants travel on their own. A parks and rec staff member will hand out lift tickets at the mountain.
