American Cancer Society Looking for Participants for Study

The American Cancer Society is looking for people in central Virginia to participate in a long-term cancer prevention study.

The group held an information session at the Jefferson Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville today.

The study will involve people between the ages of 30 and 65 who have not been diagnosed with cancer.

The study involves an online survey, a physical exam and blood sample at first, followed by survey updates every few years.

"This is the third time we've done a cancer prevention study and the other two have shown us the connection between tobacco use and cancer and also between some lifestyle choices and certain types of cancer like eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising more regularly," said Patti Jackson, the ACS Area Executive Director. "So we're expecting to extend the knowledge base we have with this third study."

Recruiters are trying to get 1,600 people to sign up in central Virginia.
