SYDNEY -- Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving will headline the cast of new independent thriller, Strangerland, which local agency Screen Australia said on Monday it had greenlit for production financing.
The story centers on Catherine and Matthew Parker, whose relationship is pushed to the brink when their two teenage children disappear into the remote Australian desert and they are forced to confront the mystery of their children's fate.

Kim Farrant is directing from a script by Fiona Seres and Michael Kinirons. Producers are Naomi Wenck and Macdara Kelleher and executive producers are Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners, Maria Cestone, Sarah E. Johnson and Tranmsission Films’ Andrew Mackie and Richard Payten.

The film is being produced by Dragonfly Pictures and Fastnet Films, with gap financing provided by Worldview Entertainment.
International sales are being handled by Wild Bunch and Transmission Films is the Australian distributor.
Strangerland is part of a slate of six feature films in which Screen Australia is investing AUS$5.4 million ($5.238 million), triggering over $31.3 million in production expenditure.
