Got Compassionate Corporatism? | The Living Principles

This post was featured in Forbes.com.

With all the discussion of corporate social responsibility nowadays, it?s easy to confuse CSR with corporate philanthropy. ?But these two business imperatives are, indeed, distinct, with strategies that operate differently within companies and within the communities they impact.

Corporate philanthropy is just one form of corporate social responsibility. ?As with all forms of CSR, corporate philanthropy can provide a company with a ?halo effect? and an uptick in?employee engagement, but the long-term strategies of CSR are more likely to affect a company?s global?community impact?and bottom-line.

Whereas CSR is usually a company-wide strategic business effort that involves every department, corporate philanthropy is often confined to the executive suite, with senior management frequently making decisions about how and where to delegate funds or grants, or guiding corporate fundraising ideas that involve employees. ?While corporate philanthropy is usually confined to a narrow range of nonprofits, CSR is typically more broadly focused and can have wide reverberations on a company?s employees, customers and supply chain.

Corporate philanthropy is typically played out on a grander scale than individual philanthropy, simply because companies can provide assets beyond the capacity of most individuals, including in-kind donations. ?Any civic-minded individual can donate time and cash to good causes. ?But most individuals can?t donate thousands of blankets; a company involved with textiles can. ?Most folks can?t give away thousands of pounds of food; a large food manufacturing corporation can. ?Further, an individual?s philanthropic work typically can?t command the kind of exposure that draws widespread attention to a particular cause; a corporation?s philanthropy can, particularly when it?s paired with cause marketing. ?

Traditional corporate philanthropy ? often called checkbook philanthropy ? is unstructured. But companies are increasingly developing more formal and progressive programs around their corporate philanthropy efforts, including such initiatives as:

Matching gifts: ?A donation made to a non-profit which is tied to a separate contribution by another donor. ?Since the prospect of a matching gift encourages donations, many companies offer a matching gift program to motivate employee contributions to non-profits. The matching gift could be dollar for dollar or a partial match for each dollar, and sometimes the matching gifts can be multiples of the original donation. ?Companies can match up to a certain total amount per year or perhaps provide unlimited matching, but the best corporate giving programs can change the matching on an individual campaign basis. ?For example if your company supports a disaster recovery effort, the company may increase the maximum contribution, or match at a higher rate for the duration of the campaign.

Employee directed grants: ?Directed grants are funds contributed by a corporation but with the guidance of its employees, thus empowering the workforce to help benefit the causes they care about. ?

Volunteer grants (aka Dollars for Doers): ?A type of program offered by businesses to match employee volunteerism with corporate donations. ?Think of it like this: an employee puts in time working at a charity and a wage gets paid ? but to the charity. ?It?s a win-win for worthy causes, caring workers and companies interested in employee engagement.

According to statistics compiled for the 2012 Corporate Philanthropy Summit, corporate giving fell slightly last year, but it has still surged back since the low point during the recent recession. ?That?s because corporate philanthropy has become an important ?- and expected ? business function, ushering money, materials and corporate volunteering into the non-profit ecosystem, all while enhancing a company?s brand image. ?The goodwill which businesses generate through the corporate philanthropy aspect of their corporate social responsibility has become so critical to a company?s reputation that its absence is now noticed and negatively judged. ?While corporate philanthropy is just one aspect of CSR, it?s a vital one that companies ignore at their own peril.

Benefits of Hiring a Lawyer for Your Personal Injury Case ...

Last updated 7 hours 57 minutes ago

Have you been involved in an auto accident or been the victim of medical malpractice? These are two matters that fall within the category of personal injury law. If you have been injured in this type of accident, you may be facing extensive medical bills and a loss of income that is quickly adding to your stress. One of the benefits of hiring a personal injury lawyer is that the attorney will advocate on your behalf so you can receive the compensation to which you are entitled. Other benefits include:

Lawyers Who Know the Law
Your case may involve multiple claims or multiple parties. Part of your lawyer?s job is to determine who should be held legally responsible for your accident. This includes analyzing issues like comparative negligence and damages.

Experience That Helps Create Success
An experienced personal injury lawyer will have a good idea of what your injuries are worth, your likelihood of success at trial, and more. Lawyers can also help increase the value of your case. If you are dealing with an insurance adjuster or another party?s attorney, they may mislead you about the value of your claim and the law. An attorney will protect your rights and likely increase the value of your case because he or she knows the law and will know when the other party is misrepresenting the law.

Having an Advocate in Court
Some cases settle before going to court, but if your case goes to trial, you need the experience of a personal injury lawyer on your side. An attorney not only understands the law, but trial and courtroom procedures as well.

If you have sustained injuries in an accident, it is important to consider the benefits of hiring an attorney. The personal injury lawyers at Fox and Fox Attorneys at Law know what it takes to ensure that you receive fair compensation for your accident. Call (888) 480-1439 to schedule a consultation.

Chronic stress linked to high risk of stroke

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Chronic stress, prompted by major life stressors and type A personality traits, is linked to a high risk of stroke, finds research published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Chronic stress, manifested as physical and/or mental symptoms in response to stressors lasting longer than 6 months has been linked to a heightened risk of heart disease. But its impact on the risk of stroke has not been clear.

The research team base their findings on150 adults, with an average age of 54, who had been admitted to one stroke unit, and 300 randomly selected healthy people of a similar age who lived in the same neighbourhood.

Levels of chronic stress were assessed using the combined quantitative scores of four validated scales, looking at major life events; symptoms, such as anxiety and depression; general wellbeing; and behaviour patterns indicative of type A personality (ERCTA scale).

Type A behaviours include hostility, aggression, impatience and a quick temper. A score of 24 or higher on the ERCTA scale is considered to be indicative of a type A personality.

Participants were also assessed for known biological risk factors for stroke, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of heart rhythm abnormalities, and daytime sleepiness.

And they were quizzed on their lifestyle, including their caffeine, alcohol and energy drink intake, as well as whether they smoked, had a partner, and a job.

The results showed that several factors were independently associated with a heightened risk of stroke.

Compared with the healthy comparison group, the risk of a stroke was almost four times higher among those who had experienced a major life event in the previous year.

A high score on the ERCTA scale more than doubled stroke risk, as did a current or previous history of smoking, and intake of two or more energy drinks a day.

And those with heart rhythm disturbances were more than three times as likely to have a stroke while those with a high daytime sleepiness score almost tripled their risk. And being a man boosted the risk nine-fold.

But when all the factors were assessed together, the risk of a stroke was associated with a stressful life and type A behaviours. And this held true, irrespective of other risk factors, including gender and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Euro up on ECB hopes; hurricane jitters lift oil

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The euro rose against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday on bets the European Central Bank will soon act to tackle the bloc's debt crisis, while U.S. crude oil prices rallied as Hurricane Isaac approached the Gulf Coast.

Stocks were little changed on Wall Street as mixed data gave investors little indication whether Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke might signal more economic stimulus from the Fed when he speaks on Friday. Trading was very light, the third-lowest volume for a full session so far this year.

U.S. crude prices settled 0.9 percent higher as Hurricane Isaac made its way through the Gulf of Mexico, forcing companies to close down oil rigs and refineries.

Investors were looking ahead to Bernanke's speech on Friday at an annual meeting of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where clues on more stimulus could translate into a weaker U.S. dollar.

The European Central Bank said its president, Mario Draghi, will not attend the conference due to a heavy workload, news that gave further support to the euro.

Draghi's absence is seen as a hint that "he will be busy finalizing the details of policy proposals to be unveiled in the coming weeks," according to Nick Bennenbroek, head of currency strategy at Wells Fargo Bank. The ECB will meet on September 6.

The single currency rose 0.55 percent to $1.2568.

Upbeat U.S. housing data made it harder for investors to determine if the Fed will announce further stimulus to the U.S. economy, a bet that has supported a recent rally in equities and other risk assets.

"Looks like we are taking a wait-and-see on Bernanke," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

He said a handful of global economic indicators were mixed, leaving room for the Fed to pump more money into the economy.

"Unfortunately a fair amount of stimulus is probably priced in so we are at a period now where bad news is good news until we hear what (Bernanke) is actually going to do," said Ablin.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 21.68 points, or 0.17 percent, to 13,102.99. The S&P 500 Index <.spx> dipped 1.14 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,409.30. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> rose 3.95 points, or 0.13 percent, to 3,077.14.

An MSCI gauge of global equities <.world> fell 0.2 percent and the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> closed down 0.7 percent. U.S. dollar-denominated Nikkei futures fell 0.55 percent.

Global growth worries resurfaced after Japan cut its assessment for the economy, citing slow-downs in the United States and China as well as Europe's debt crisis.

Adding to signs of weakness, Spain said its recession had deepened in the second quarter as domestic spending slumped in the wake of tough austerity measures aimed at tackling the government's fiscal problems.

U.S. Treasuries prices edged up as traders anticipated hints from Bernanke of further economic stimulus, possibly in the form of more bond purchases.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 5/32, the yield at 1.6352 percent.

Home Improvement | Finding the Best Dallas Roofers for Your ...

The roofing of your house will greatly determine the kind of house you have. A good roof enhances the beauty and the strength of your house.

The roofing of your house will greatly determine the kind of house you have. A good roof enhances the beauty and the strength of your house. You will thus be able to improve on both qualities by getting the best Dallas roofers if you are to have a suitable house or commercial building. When finding the best Austin roofers you will consider several aspects. You will also have to do plenty of research to get the most appropriate contractor to do your housing project. The process of finding the best Dallas roofers can be tricky depending on the kind of roofing project you are engaged in. In finding such a company, you can follow the simple process outlined below.

First, you need to establish the companies that you can work with. You have to look at the business bureau and ask your relatives and friends. More appropriately, you should ask people with similar projects as yours, that is, similar design and shape and scale. Some Austin roofers have specialized in only one kind of roofing Dallas. This offers several advantages and disadvantages too. If they are specialized in the kind of roofing as similar as yours then you will get expert roofing Dallas. However, such Dallas roofers will not be very suitable to work on a diversified project. Having identified a number of Austin roofers, then you will have to move to the next step of getting the best amongst them.

Check from the company website or visit its official offices and see the portfolio. Looking at previous jobs will help you determine the level of experience and skill possessed by the companies. It will also help you reduce the number of companies now based on their experience, skills and cost. The issue of cost is a tricky one. When dealing with roofing Dallas, ensure you have the whole picture in mind. The best deal is where the company provides all you will need and you just pay the total cost. Usually this is calculated per the square roofing. However, you might need to compare this with the cost if you meet the expenses for getting the material by yourself. To minimize on unwanted future costs, you can rely on the metal roofs Fort Worth and spare yourself future maintenance costs.

Another aspect of the companies you should consider is the equipment they have. The kind of equipment the company has is a determinant of a number of issues. First, it assures you of quality and secondly it ensures the work is completed in time and does not put a huge demand on the available resources. The right modern equipment is also a testament of the company?s expertise. However, for a small job, you will not need to go to such lengths especially a repair job. This is majorly because only big Dallas roofers have the capital to get the latest equipment and are only suitable for large scale roofing Dallas. You should however, get the best deal and the right value for your money. A little extra expense will go a long way in giving you the best roofing Dallas possible.

Issac bears down on Florida, but Keys residents remain sunny

On Sunday, Tropical Storm Issac skirted the Florida Keys, but barely ruffled residents. The storm is expected to gain strength, and could become a Category 2 hurricane Tuesday or Wednesday.

By Matt Sedensky,?Associated Press / August 26, 2012

Shira Edllan Gervasi, of Israel, puts her name on plywood protecting a storefront in Key West, Fla., in anticipation of Tropical Storm Isaac on Saturday.

Tropical Storm Isaac barely stirred Florida Keys residents from their fabled nonchalance Sunday, while the Gulf Coast braced for the possibility that the sprawling storm will strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Isaac was expected to cross the Keys by late afternoon, then turn northwest and strike as a Category 2 hurricane somewhere between the New Orleans area to the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The storm was predicted to pass west of Tampa, the site of the Republican National Convention, but it had already disrupted the schedule there because of the likelihood of heavy rain and strong winds.

Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac caused considerable inconvenience, with hundreds of flights canceled at airports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. There were scattered power outages from Key West to Fort Lauderdale affecting more than 6,000 customers, and flooding occurred in low-lying areas.

Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. But while officials urged residents in southeast Florida to stay home, that recommendation was ignored by surfers and joggers on Miami Beach and shoppers at area malls.

In Key West, Emalyn Mercer rode her bike while decked out with a snorkel and mask, inflatable arm bands and a paddle, just for a laugh. She rode with Kelly Friend, who wore a wet suit, dive cap and lobster gloves.

"We're just going for a drink," Mercer said.

"With the ones that are brave enough like us," Friend added.

Along famed Duval Street, many stores, bars and restaurants closed, the cigar rollers and palm readers packed up, and just a handful of drinking holes remained open.

But people posed for pictures at the Southernmost Point, while Dave Harris and Robyn Roth took her dachshund for a walk and checked out boats rocking along the waterfront.

"Just a summer day in Key West," Harris said.

That kind of ho-hum attitude extended farther up the coast. Edwin Reeder swung by a gas station in Miami Shores ? not for fuel, but drinks and snacks.

"This isn't a storm," he said. "It's a rain storm."

With a laugh, Reeder said he has not stocked up aside from buying dog and cat food.

The forecast wasn't funny, however. Isaac was expected to draw significant strength from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and with more uncertainty than usual about the path, a hurricane watch was in effect from east of Morgan City, La., to Indian Pass, Fla.

The storm, which stretched more than 200 miles from its center, was expected to make landfall as a Category 2 hurricane, meaning top sustained winds of 96 to 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

The Gulf Coast hasn't been hit by a hurricane since 2008, when Dolly, Ike and Gustav all struck the region.

Hurricane center forecasters are uncertain of the storm's path because two of their best computer models now track the storm on opposite sides of a broad cone. One model has Isaac going well west and the other well east. For the moment, the predicted track goes up the middle.

10 Proven Ways to Go Viral | Seymour Products

Although there is a debate as to when the term viral marketing really originated, it did rise in popularity in the mid to late 90?s. Viral marketing works just like a virus. One person reads a marketing message, gets infected by it and passes it on to another person. The better the message, the more it spreads. And the term viral marketing is born!

There are many methods and techniques for spreading your viral marketing message. The explosion of social media marketing has brought viral marketing to new heights. But along with social media there are also more traditional ways to spread your marketing virus. Below are ten totally doable ways to launch and propel your viral marketing campaign.

1. Free eBook ? eBooks have been a very popular and effective means of viral marketing for quite some time. Compile a free PDF ebook using articles you have written, useful information, resources, etc., and start spreading that virus. Offer the ebook to your visitors for free. Write a message inside encouraging them to give the ebook to their visitors and so on and so on. Submit the ebook to free ebook sites and directories. Add a link to the ebook in your email sigtag. The better the content of the ebook the more the ?virus? will spread.

If you feel that you cannot write your own ebook, there are a lot of PLR and rebrandable ebooks you could use to achieve the same results.

2. Newsletters ? If you publish a newsletter, you can use that to increase your viral marketing. Make it easy for people to share it with others. Encourage your subscribers to forward a copy to their friends so they can subscribe. Offer a free gift to the subscribers who can get the most people to subscribe.

3. Articles ? Writing and submitting articles can be one of the most powerful viral marketing techniques. This will be most likely happen only if your article is well-written and contains helpful, useful information. Do not try to pass off a long sales pitch as an article. Submit your article to quality sites that allow visitors to reprint the article with your resource box. Add a Send to a Friend link in your resource box. When possible, thank the person for reprinting your article and let them know of any other articles you might have. Compile a list of newsletter publishers who accept article submissions. There are countless ways to spread your quality articles and infect many people.

4. Social Media ? Social media has the capabilities of expanding your viral marketing to new heights. Try to regularly participate in at least the top three social sites which are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. A newcomer that is rising in popularity very fast is Pinterest so I would recommend starting with that one as well. When used effectively, these social media sites allow you to spread your virus in ways that were not before possible.

5. Blogging ? Blogging is a form of social media marketing and can do wonders for your viral marketing. A quality blog will pull in many readers on a regular basis. Make it easy for your readers to interact with comments and opinions. Update your content consistently and always respond to reader comments for more success.

6. Tell-A-Friend ? A free tell-a-friend script is a handy thing to have on your site or blog. It allows people to send your webpage to anyone they think would be interested thus launching your viral marketing. The easier it is for people to share your message the more your virus will spread.

7. Social Media Share Buttons ? These highly effective buttons allow your visitors to easily share your blog, site or information with all their social media followers and friends. You can find many options for free that have these buttons for many of the social media sites. The first site to come up for some of these options is ShareThis.

8. Videos ? Over two million people watch YouTube videos each day so getting your marketing video visible to this massive audience will pump up your viral marketing. You can also post video clips on your site with a well-spoken marketing message or demonstration. Make it easy for people to pass on your video to their friends and followers.

9. Word-of-Mouth ? Word of mouth is one of the oldest forms of viral marketing. It?s been around long before the internet was ever dreamed of. It is also one of the most effective because people are passing on your message to people they know and their opinion is probably taken with more approval and consideration. It can also be more difficult because it requires people to take a more involved action than clicking a button. Make your customers feel happy and satisfied and they will spread the word (or virus).

10. Email ? Email is one of the more traditional online viral marketing methods. How many times have you received emails that have been forwarded to you by people you don?t even know? That is the power of viral. Don?t be afraid to ask people to forward your emails to everyone they know. Sending out emails of value, quality and usefulness just might cause a widespread infection!

The power of viral marketing is unlimited but your marketing ?virus? needs to be unique, useful, entertaining and powerful. People will not spread something that is not worth spreading. Study marketing tactics of other companies but try to develop your own unique idea or twist of an old idea, that no one else has used before. Develop a new virus for which there is no cure!

D-backs trade Saunders to Orioles for Lindstrom

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Eager to bolster an inexperienced pitching staff during their first playoff run since 1997, the Baltimore Orioles obtained left-hander Joe Saunders on Sunday in a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Baltimore gave Arizona right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom and cash considerations or a player to be named later.

Saunders, who was scheduled to start Sunday against San Diego, was 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts with Arizona this season. He won 12 games last season while helping the Diamondbacks win their first NL West title since 2007.

Baltimore began the day tied for the second American League wild-card spot with Oakland and in third place in the AL East, only four games behind the division-leading New York Yankees.

"I like our ball club's chances," said Dan Duquette, the Orioles vice president of baseball operations. "There's an old saying: If you're going in the right direction, keep walking. So the addition of Joe Saunders gives us a chance to keep walking in the right direction. And I think it gives us better balance against the left-handed lineups that we're going to be facing."

Saunders was born in nearby northern Virginia, played high school ball in Virginia and pitched at Virginia Tech before being drafted in the first round of the 2002 draft by the Los Angeles Angels.

"We've liked Joe Saunders for quite a while," Duquette said. "We had some discussions with him in the offseason. He's a local kid and a professional left-handed pitcher. He's won more than he's lost in the big leagues, he's pitched in the American League, he's pitched in the playoffs. He's pitched in a tough ballpark in Arizona."

The Orioles have only one left-hander in the bullpen and a rotation that includes rookies Miguel Gonzalez, Wei-Yin Chen and Steve Johnson.

"We just liked his experience, which I think compliments our starting rotation," Duquette said of Saunders. "And I also like the fact he's left-handed."

Saunders, 31, has pitched for the Angels and Diamondbacks since launching his big league career in 2005.

"I just like this addition of veteran left-handed depth to our staff," Duquette said. "It helps solidify the starting rotation while we're waiting for (injured) Jason Hammel to return. Then, if Jason Hammel does return, it gives us another good left-handed option because Joe Saunders is very good left-on-left. While we're waiting for (left-handed reliever Troy) Patton to come back, if we have several starters doing well, Joe gives us more depth and experience to our pitching staff."

Lindstrom went 1-0 with a 2.72 ERA in 34 appearances with the Orioles this season. He has held right-handers to a .207 average and scoreless in 10 of his past 11 outings.

Lindstrom has played six major league seasons with Miami, Houston, Colorado and Baltimore.

Duquette believed Saunders would be more valuable to the Orioles than Lindstrom at this point in the season.

"Matt Lindstrom did a nice job for us. He contributed to the bullpen," Duquette said. "I just think the left-handed addition to our starting rotation and the capability to get more innings at a high level was better for the team at this stage of the season. And who knows? Joe Saunders is a local kid. Maybe he's with us beyond this year. That's something we can take a look at. It certainly strengthens us now."

To fill Lindstrom's place on the 25-man roster, the Orioles recalled right-hander Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk. Arrieta, Baltimore's opening day starter, went 3-9 with a 6.13 ERA in 18 starts with the Orioles before being optioned to Norfolk on July 5.

Promising new drug target discovered for treatment and prevention of heart failure

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2012) ? A promising new drug target for the treatment and prevention of heart failure has been discovered by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, US.

The study was presented at the ESC Congress 2012 by principal investigator Professor Roger J. Hajjar, MD.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 5.8 million Americans suffer from heart failure and 670,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. One in five people with heart failure die within one year of diagnosis. Heart failure is most often treated with aggressive medical and device therapy, but has no cure. The most common symptoms of heart failure are shortness of breath, feeling tired, and swelling in the ankles, feet, legs, and sometimes the abdomen.

In this study presented at the ESC Congress 2012, researchers identified a new drug target that may treat and/or prevent heart failure. The team evaluated failing human and pig hearts and discovered that SUMO1 (small ubiquitin-like modifier), a small protein that regulates the activity of key transporter genes, was decreased in failing hearts. When the researchers injected SUMO1 into these hearts via gene therapy, cardiac function was significantly improved.

"This indicates that SUMO1 may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of heart failure," said Professor Hajjar, who is research director of Mount Sinai's Wiener Family Cardiovascular Research Laboratories.

Led by Professor Hajjar, the team has been evaluating the transporter gene SERCA2a in patients with severe heart failure as part of the CUPID (Calcium Up-regulation by Percutaneous administration of gene therapy In cardiac Disease) trial. When delivered via an adeno-associated virus vector -- an inactive virus that acts as a medication transporter -- into cardiac cells, SERCA2a demonstrated improvement or stabilisation with minimal side effects. But Professor Hajjar said: "We found that while injection with SERCA2a restored cardiac function, over time the new SERCA2a became dysfunctional. This indicated that something else upstream from SERCA2a was causing the dysfunction in the heart."

Dr Changwon Kho, PhD, and Dr Ah Young Lee, PhD, two experts in the study of cardiac proteins at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, identified SUMO1 as the regulator of SERCA2a, showing that it enhanced its function and improved its stability and enzyme activity. When Professor Hajjar and his team studied human and animal models, they found that when SUMO1 was decreased, SERCA2a became dysfunctional in human hearts, showing that SUMO1 plays a protective role. When the team injected SUMO1 as a gene therapy, they found that it protected SERCA2a from oxidative stresses that are prevalent in heart failure.

"Our experiments over the last four years beginning with the discovery of SUMO1 as an interacting protein of SERCA2a have shown that it plays a critical role in the development of heart failure," said Professor Hajjar. "In fact, SUMO1 may be a therapeutic target at the earliest signs of development and may be beneficial in preventing its progression, a much needed advance for the millions suffering from this disease."

Dr Lisa Tilemann extended the experiments performed in mice and rats in a preclinical model of heart failure in porcine models.

Professor Hajjar said: "We have now clearly shown that SUMO1 gene delivery can enhance cardiac function and stabilize the deteriorations of left ventricular volumes in large animals with severe heart failure. We have also shown that delivering SUMO1 and SERCA2a concomitantly can have synergistic benefits on overall function in heart failure."

Led by Professor Hajjar, the Mount Sinai team discovered the landmark potential of SERCA2a in 1999 and since then has been pursuing its potential as a treatment delivered via gene therapy. The next stages in the research include testing a novel gene therapy construct which will combine both SUMO1 and SERCA2a within one gene therapy vector that will enable the investigators to express both genes simultaneously. Similar to their efforts in the CUPID trial they will explore the delivery of SERCA2a and SUMO1 via gene therapy. Additionally, the research team has developed a cellular test to screen for compounds that may increase the interaction of SERCA2a with SUMO1, evaluating SUMO1 as an adjunctive therapy to SERCA2a.

Professor Hajjar concluded: "While this study re-affirms the importance of SERCA2a as a target in heart failure, our discovery of the critical role that SUMO1 plays in improving SERCA2a function in heart failure will hopefully lead to novel treatment strategies for patients with heart failure."

Heyward, Minor lead Braves past Giants 7-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Jason Heyward credits the crowd as much as anything for his success in San Francisco.

Heyward hit a three-run homer and Mike Minor won for the first time in five starts as the Atlanta Braves beat the Giants 7-3 on Saturday, ending San Francisco's five-game winning streak.

"The crowd always keeps you on your toes here and it's a good environment to play in," Heyward said. "They're always here, it's a good team and they have good pitching, so you have to focus every at-bat."

Heyward became the first left-handed hitter to take Madison Bumgarner deep in two years. The slugger has five home runs and 11 RBIs at the Giants' waterfront ballpark.

"I'm just looking for strikes to hit," Heyward said. "Don't miss the one you get to hit because if you do, he's got you."

Michael Bourn had two hits and drove in two runs for the Braves, who had lost six of seven but still lead the NL wild-card race. Reed Johnson and Martin Prado also knocked in runs.

Minor (7-10) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking none. He also doubled, walked and scored twice.

"I was just trying to get guys out and limit the damage," he said. "I felt good. It's not about being fatigued or anything like that."

Pinch-hitter Gregor Blanco had a two-run double for the NL West-leading Giants, who had won eight of 10.

Bumgarner (14-8) allowed four runs and seven hits over 6 1-3 innings. He matched his season high with four walks and struck out five, losing for only the second time at home.

"He's been so good all year and I thought he still pitched a pretty good game," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He made one mistake and it went for a three-run homer."

Bumgarner walked Minor and Prado around a strikeout of Bourn in the third. Heyward smacked a home run into the right-field bleachers to put the Braves ahead 3-0.

"I kind of got out of whack there," Bumgarner said. "It was a fastball up and over the middle of the plate."

Hunter Pence was hit by a pitch leading off the fifth and scored on Brandon Belt's groundout to make it 3-1.

Bourn singled home a run in the seventh to make it 4-1.

"We had a good approach," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "I was ecstatic about Minor's performance. He minimized the damage and was dominant."

Blanco doubled off Chad Durbin to drive in two runs in the seventh.

Bourn and Prado each walked with the bases loaded against Jeremy Affeldt to force in runs in the eighth. Johnson doubled home a run in the ninth.

"It got a little sloppy there and we let the game get away," Bochy said.

NOTES: San Francisco RHP Eric Hacker was optioned to Triple-A Fresno after the game. The Giants will make a corresponding move Sunday. ... Bumgarner has pitched at least six innings in all but two starts. ... Sonoma Mayor Joanne Saunders declared Dan Uggla Day, honoring the Braves' second baseman. ... RHP Tim Lincecum (7-13, 5.30 ERA) pitches Sunday for the Giants. He won his last outing, beating the Dodgers in Los Angeles. ... Giants OF Francisco Peguero made his major league debut. Baseball America rated him as having the best outfield arm in the system. ... Braves RHP Tim Hudson (12-4, 3.69) pitches Sunday. He is 7-4 against the Giants. ... Atlanta RHP Ben Sheets was placed on the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation. RHP Miguel Batista was called up from Triple-A. ... Eight of Heyward's last 16 hits have been for extra bases.

Palermo's chief and union leader may meet on strike

Palermo Villa Inc. CEO Giacomo Fallucca and AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka are trying to set a time and place to meet to talk about union organizing efforts and the labor strike at the frozen pizza manufacturing plant in Milwaukee, a spokesman for Palermo's said Friday.

Fallucca wrote to Trumka last week asking for a meeting, saying, "There has been much misinformation communicated regarding Palermo's" after Trumka endorsed a national boycott of Palermo's Pizza and its major pizza customer, Costco.

Fallucca said he wanted to "reach out to you and discuss the real issues that Palermo's faces to allay your concerns."

Friday, Trumka said he "welcomes a dialogue" with Fallucca to discuss the company's recent actions in response to the union organizing efforts.

"I am encouraged by your willingness to discuss workers' desire for a voice on the job," Trumka said in a news release responding to Fallucca's letter. "It is only through open dialogue that management and labor can reach a just and fair resolution of workplace problems and I am happy to participate in opening such a dialogue."

Fallucca said he was willing to go to AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C., for a meeting. Palermo's director of marketing, Chris Dresselhuys, said Friday that discussions are under way with the union leader about setting a time and place for the meeting.

Meanwhile, Voces de la Frontera, which has been organizing the workers, said it will launch a "national day of action" Saturday at the Costco in Grafton asking the store to pull the Palermo/Kirkland pizza from its shelves. Rallies and informational pickets will also be held Saturday at 25 Costco stores in 15 cities, including Los Angeles, Seattle, Philadelphia, Houston and Miami.

Christine Neumann-Ortiz, the executive director of Voces, said Costco has not agreed to pull the Palermo's pizza.

About 80 to 100 production workers at Palermo's went on strike June 1 after workers said the company tried to thwart their efforts to form a union to discuss issues of pay, worker safety, promotion and discrimination.

The company has called the complaints "categorically false."

Further, Voces claims the company used an immigration audit at the company as a tactic to stop organizing efforts, again allegations the company denies.

A July date had been set for a union vote, but Voces filed numerous complaints with the National Labor Relations Board and the election was subsequently canceled. The charges include refusing to bargain with employees, retaliation and replacing striking workers.

Last week, Palermo's said it asked Voces to agree to a vote by employees on forming a union. But Neumann-Ortiz said there can be no election until the NLRB resolves the complaints.

Comments due Sept. 26 on new domain names - NRA News Blog

The organization that manages the Internet domain-name process is moving ahead with plans that could dramatically broaden the list of "generic top-level domains" beyond the 22 domains in use today, such as .org and .com.

ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, earlier this year received more than 2,000 applications for new top-level domains, with individuals and companies applying to register new domains ranging from .mcdonalds to .restaurant. ICANN will accept public comments on these applications through Sept. 26.

ICANN will then sift through the applications and comments to decide which domain names to approve. The organization hopes to begin rolling out new domain names in 2013.

The National Restaurant Association is part of the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight, an effort by more than 160 business groups and companies to urge a deliberative process as domain names are expanded. CRIDO is concerned about confusion for Internet users as well as the possibility of huge new costs if businesses are forced to register new domains to protect their trademarks and brands.

Visit ICANN's website for more information about the 2,000+ applications ICANN has received or to submit comments on any of these applications.

King Richard III's grave may be under parking lot

King Richard III of England had the honor of being memorialized in a William Shakespeare play after his death in battle in 1485. Now, modern-day archaeologists are on the hunt for the medieval king's physical resting place.

The University of Leicester, Leicester City Council and the Richard III Society have joined forces to search for the grave of Richard III, thought to be under a parking lot for city council offices. The team will use ground-penetrating radar to search for the ideal spots to dig.

"This archaeological work offers a golden opportunity to learn more about medieval Leicester as well as about Richard III's last resting place ? and, if he is found, to re-inter his remains with proper solemnity in Leicester Cathedral," Philippa Langley, a Richard III Society member, said in a statement.

Richard III was King of England from 1483 to 1485. He died during the Battle of Bosworth Field during the War of the Roses, an English civil war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Richard III was the last English king to die in battle. Shakespeare penned "Richard III," a play about the tragic king, approximately 100 years later.

Regardless of his Shakespearean claim to fame, the king was talked about in his own right. "Richard III is a charismatic figure who attracts tremendous interest, partly because he has been so much maligned in past centuries, and partly because he occupies a pivotal place in English history," Langley said.

"The continuing interest in Richard means that many fables have grown up around his grave." Langley said, ?adding that some far-fetched tales include that the bones were thrown into the river Soar. [ The Science of Death: 10 Tales from the Crypt ]

"Other fables, equally discredited, claimed that his coffin was used as a horse-trough," Langley said.

After his death, the king was stripped and brought to Leicester, where he was buried in the church of the Franciscan Friary, known as the Greyfriars. The location of Greyfriars was eventually lost to history.?

"The big question for us is determining the whereabouts of the church on the site and also where in the church the body was buried," University of Leicester archaeologist Richard Buckley said in a statement. "Although in many ways finding the remains of the king is a long-shot, it is a challenge we shall undertake enthusiastically. There is certainly potential for the discovery of burials within the area, based on previous discoveries and the postulated position of the church."

The search begins on Aug. 25. If remains that could be Richard III are found, they will be subject to DNA analysis at the University of Leicester.

Most mutations come from dad: New insights into age, height and sex reshape views of human evolution

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Humans inherit more than three times as many mutations from their fathers as from their mothers, and mutation rates increase with the father's age but not the mother's, researchers have found in the largest study of human genetic mutations to date.

The study, based on the DNA of around 85,000 Icelanders, also calculates the rate of human mutation at high resolution, providing estimates of when human ancestors diverged from nonhuman primates. It is one of two papers published this week by the journal Nature Genetics as well as one published at Nature that shed dramatic new light on human evolution.

"Most mutations come from dad," said David Reich, professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School and a co-leader of the study. In addition to finding 3.3 paternal germline mutations for each maternal mutation, the study also found that the mutation rate in fathers doubles from age 20 to 58 but that there is no association with age in mothers -- a finding that may shed light on conditions, such as autism, that correlate with the father's age.

The study's first author is James Sun, a graduate student in Reich's lab who worked with researchers from deCODE Genetics, a biopharma company based in Reykjavik, Iceland, to analyze about 2,500 short sequences of DNA taken from 85,289 Icelanders in 24,832 father-mother-child trios. The sequences, called microsatellites, vary in the number of times that they repeat, and are known to mutate at a higher rate than average places in the genome.

Reich's team identified 2,058 mutational changes, yielding a rate of mutation that suggests human and chimpanzee ancestral populations diverged between 3.7 million and 6.6 million years ago.

A second team, also based at deCODE Genetics (but not involving HMS researchers), published a paper this week in Nature on a large-scale direct estimate of the rate of single nucleotide substitutions in human genomes (a different type of mutation process), and came to largely consistent findings.

The finding complicates theories drawn from the fossil evidence. The upper bound, 6.6 million years, is less than the published date of Sahelanthropus tchadensis, a fossil that has been interpreted to be a human ancestor since the separation of chimpanzees, but is dated to around 7 million years old. The new study suggests that this fossil may be incorrectly interpreted.

Great Heights

A second study led by HMS researchers, also published in Nature Genetics this week, adds to the picture of human evolution, describing a newly observable form of recent genetic adaptation.

The team led by Joel Hirschhorn, Concordia Professor of Pediatrics and professor of genetics at Boston Children's Hospital and HMS, first asked why closely-related populations can have noticeably different average heights. David Reich also contributed to this study.

They examined genome-wide association data and found that average differences in height across Europe are partly due to genetic factors. They then showed that these genetic differences are the result of an evolutionary process that acts on variation in many genes at once. This type of evolution had been proposed to exist but had not previously been detected in humans.

Although recent human evolution is difficult to observe directly, some of its impact can be inferred by studying the human genome. In recent years, genetic studies have uncovered many examples where recent evolution has left a distinctive signature on the human genome. The clearest "footprints" of evolution have been seen in regions of DNA surrounding mutations that occurred fairly recently (typically in the last several thousand years) and confer an advantageous trait, such as resistance to malaria. Hirschhorn's team observed, for the first time in humans, a different signature of recent evolution: widespread small but consistent changes at many different places in the genome, all affecting the same trait, adult height.

"This paper offers the first proof and clear example of a new kind of human evolution for a specific trait," said Hirschhorn, who is also a senior associate member of the Broad Institute. "We provide a demonstration of how humans have been able to adapt rapidly without needing to wait for new mutations to happen, by drawing instead on the existing genetic diversity within the human population."

Average heights can differ between populations, even populations that are genetically very similar, which suggests that human height might have been evolving differently across these populations. Hirschhorn's team studied variants in the genome that are known to have small but consistent effects on height: people inheriting the "tall" version of these variants are known to be slightly taller on average than people inheriting the "short" versions of the same variants.

The researchers discovered that, in northern Europe, the "tall" versions of these variants are consistently a little more common than they are in southern Europe. The combined effects of the "tall" versions being more common can partly explain why northern Europeans are on average taller than southern Europeans. The researchers then showed that these slight differences have arisen as a result of evolution acting at many variants, and acting differently in northern than in southern Europe.

"This paper explains -- at least in part -- why some European populations, such as people from Sweden, are taller on average than others, such as people from Italy," Hirschhorn said.

The researchers were only able to detect this signature of evolution by using the results of recent genome-wide association studies by the GIANT consortium, which identified hundreds of different genetic variants that influence height.

Life Changing (Closed)

Image

When Abigail Hart was just eighteen years old her life was perfect. She had a wonderful boyfriend, was finishing up school with great grades and they had plans for the future together. It was like she was living a fairytale until it call came crashing down. Abigail realised that she was pregnant just two months before the end of school. Birth control hadn?t been on her list of priorities and there had been one or two drunken nights at parties where her boyfriend and her hadn?t been all too careful but she never thought that it would happen to her.

Liam had been her world and she would have done anything to protect him so when her parents began talking about sending her off to live with her grandmother in the city Abigail had agreed on the condition that they never told him. Abigail had always known that Liam was special, that he was going to succeed and a teen pregnancy would spoil all of this. She had done this to protect him but that didn?t mean it didn?t hurt. She cried every day and became depressed at the prospect of the rest of her life. Leaving Liam had broken her heart.

Seven months later Abigail gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl who she named Emma and it changed her life. Emma gave her a reason to live and she strived to become the best mother she could. It was hard doing it all on her own since her elderly grandmother wasn?t a lot of help but she did the best she could, getting a job as a receptionist at one of the local law firms through family connections. When Emma was two her grandmother passed away but had left the house to Abigail meaning that she had a secure place to live.

Abigail made things work the best she could but she never moved on from Liam. Over the years she had heard that he had been doing well for himself but she had no intention of ever seeing him again.

Having a Baby Abroad (part 3), NHS, midwives, home births.

We had the option to pay for private doctors for this childbirth. To be honest, going that route would still have been far less expensive than having a baby on the Anthem individual policy I had back in America. I never ruled it out, but after our first "booking appointment" with our community midwives, there was no need to consider going private. Even if I'd chosen to pay for private care, I'd still be delivering at the same hospital, with the same doctors as if I'd stayed NHS, as most private doctors also work for the NHS. Besides, I'm healthy and low-risk and, again, pregnant ... not sick.

I mentioned in previous blogs that we were surprised when our first appointment wasn't until I was already 8 weeks along, the reason being that there's nothing they could do for me at that early stage, other than make me take my clothes off and shove an ultrasound machine in places I'd prefer they not shove anything. The waiting-till-8-weeks thing took some getting used to as I'm used to seeing lima-bean ultrasounds from friends on Facebook, but ultimately the waiting made a lot of sense -- and put me in a much better place about the pregnancy. You see, I'd been slightly terrified, and hearing the midwives' calm attitude made me feel better.

Why midwives and not obstetricians? Well, assuming you don't have any major health issues and your pregnancy goes smoothly, you are tended to by midwives over here -- the way pregnant women have been for most of history. If there are any signs of a problem, you are sent to an obstetrician.

I did end up seeing an obstetrician for a bit (more about that in another blog), but the majority of our appointments have been at the neighborhood midwife centre, a short walk from our apartment. The main difference from most US care seems to be a glass half-full approach. Rather than scare you with all that could possibly go wrong, they try to keep you healthy, while watching out for warning signs of potential problems.?

Our first appointment was with the kindest midwife I've ever met. Her name was Ruth, and she spent almost an hour with us.

Let me repeat that: one hour.

When is the last time you ever had a doctor in the US spend more than ten minutes with you? Ruth was in absolutely no hurry, and after taking a urine sample and four vials of blood (see, they do actual medical testing here in these backwoods parts of the world0, she took both mine and David's complete family medical history, discussing how different conditions could play a role in our medical care. For example, when I told her my mother had had a DVT at one point, she explained that the obstetrician might want to see me to further check my bloods, as DVT's are often hereditary and more likely during pregnancy.

To further freak you out, one of the very first questions we were asked was: Do you want a home birth?? I'm pretty sure David and I guffawed mightily with great American disdain. To be honest though, at this point, if we had a few more months of pregnancy, I think we'd both be wanting a home birth. For the sake of keeping our families calm (and the fact that the birthing rooms at the Royal Infirmary resemble a Napa Valley day spa), we'll be going to the hospital to give birth. But the fact that home births are offered to those who want them (and are low risk) is a huge advancement in care, if you ask me.

Has having this baby abroad turned us into crazy hippies? Not any more than usual. Like I said before, it has just made me more comfortable with the basic fact that my body is designed to have babies. It's been a much more relaxing pregnancy than I ever could have imagined, and I'm pretty sure that's all due to the quality of care I've received.

Next time on "Having a Baby Abroad"?? : why I get sent to an obstetrician and ... spending time with a few doctors in the Royal Infirmary.
