Apr. 30, 2013 ? The number of private and public entities conducting research in synthetic biology worldwide grew significantly between 2009 and 2013, according to the latest version of an interactive map produced by the Synthetic Biology Project at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Synthetic biology, an area of research focused on the design and construction of new biological parts and devices, or the re-design of existing biological systems, is an emerging field and the focus of labs and companies around the world. The map, which builds on work the project started in 2009, is populated with more than 500 companies, universities, research institutions and other entities working on synthetic biology, showing clusters of activity in California, Massachusetts, Western Europe and East Asia.
"Part of this new activity has been driven by continuing government investments in the science," said David Rejeski, who directs the Synthetic Biology Project. "Another important factor has been the rapidly declining costs of gene sequencing, which has supported more effective approaches to engineering biological systems."
The Synthetic Biology Project found that the number of companies conducting synthetic biology research increased three-fold since 2009. A plurality of the companies involved in synthetic biology is focusing on developing bio-based specialty chemicals, fuels and/or medicines.
Since 2009, the industry has also experienced moderate levels of consolidation and failure. Of the 61 companies included on the initial 2009 inventory, six were acquired by other companies, closed their doors or can longer be identified. An additional 11 companies that were tracked between the release of the 2009 inventory and the 2013 update were also acquired, closed or cannot be identified.
In addition to the expanded listings, the updated map features improved functionality, more detailed information and additional categories and subcategories. The updated map can also be accessed on Android and Apple mobile devices.

Mashable predicted that Responsive Web Design would be 2013?s trend for many websites. On the other hand, community-based approaches, or shall we say ?social networking?, has become the main focus of many sites, business or otherwise, to attract viewers into their online pages. Facebook is on the verge of re-designing their main user page, their News Feeds, to be exact, to be more adept when being accessed via smartphones or tablets. So what?s your move for your own online presence?
Online Communities
Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and even social blogs like Tumblr have made it all too clear that making audiences involved and appreciated will attract others via referral or curiosity. Social networking has become an essential when one is considering to be prominently known in the World Wide Web, whether you?re just tweeting, posting an Instagram photo of your food, looking for online opponents or team-ups for a round of poker or WoW, or wanting to know why someone blogged about flying kites. Even if you?re into popular activities like online gaming, fashion or sports, the mere fact that the trend is overpopulated with ?expert? websites means having followers involved interactively in your website may just give you an edge above the competition. Take online gaming leader partypoker for example. Their website has adapted a community-centric approach, relying on their users? trust towards them, providing them with secure playing environments as well as up-to-date information about poker competitions, poker players and other related information. The poker site not only makes itself available through social media channels, it also makes sure that it provides easy access client support online, making it more approachable and interactive, thus attracting more users.
Responsive Web Design
Going back to social media giant Facebook, the new upcoming change has been headlined as ?Goodbye Clutter. Hello bright, beautiful stories.? While still maintaining its community-based social networking forte, it has been under development to make the interface uniform in any type of viewing platform, whether you?re using a laptop, your iPhone or iPad, or any of your chosen Android gadget. Other than focusing on a uniform, streamlined look, it is also re-emphasizing the design to focus on the user?s actions, and not just what they did on Facebook. As defined by Ethan Marcotte in his article in AListApart.com, ?Responsive web design (RWD) is a web design approach aimed at crafting sites to provide an optimal viewing experience?easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling?across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones).?
It may sound overwhelming but mind you, despite Facebook being a trendsetter in the internet game, it was not the first one to transition to RWD despite being forerunners of community-based approaches. Time, Harvard University, Mashable and even quaint small business like Tattly have already transitioned to RWD making access smoother whatever gadget you?re using. Then again, such mentioned approaches are still up to you and will depend on factors that you consider important in getting attention from internet users. Research more and then decide. It?s your call.

Minnesota went all in with three first-round picks.
Super Bowl champion Baltimore went for replacements for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.
The New York Jets added to their quarterback uncertainty by taking Geno Smith in the second round.
Teams loaded up on linemen, making the big and beefy guys this year's stars.
The 2013 NFL draft was light on glamour at the skill positions, but heavy on intrigue (when would Manti Te'o go?) and burly bodies able to either get after or protect all those pricey passers.
Denver Broncos boss John Elway called the draft "deep in the trenches.
"It wasn't sexy, but there were a lot of good football players in this draft, he said. "It was deep in the other-than-glitzy positions."
The first round included 18 linemen, one quarterback and, for the first time since 1963, no running backs.
"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," said No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle from Central Michigan taken by the Kansas City Chiefs.
Here's a breakdown:
VALIANT VIKINGS
Nobody made more noise in this year's draft than the Vikings.
Coming of a surprising run to the playoffs spearheaded by MVP Adrian Peterson, they became the first team since the Rams in 2001 to have three first-round picks. They traded four selections to New England to move up and take Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson after grabbing Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.
That's pushing all your chips into the center of the table.
"I don't think it could've worked out any better for the caliber of players we got coming into our program," Vikings GM Rick Spielman said after addressing three of his four major needs in a dizzying 30-minute span. "I'm very excited."
When the Vikings finally got back on the clock Saturday, Spielman addressed his other big need by grabbing Penn State linebackers Gerald Hodges in the fourth round and Michael Mauti in the seventh.
With that, Minnesota served notice that they're coming after Aaron Rodgers and everyone else in 2013.
QB CONUNDRUM
The Jets are testing out the old saying you can never have too many quarterbacks.
After Buffalo surprised nearly everyone by picking Florida State's EJ Manuel as the only QB in the first round (at No. 16), the Jets pulled off their own stunner by selecting West Virginia's Geno Smith in the second round, at No. 39.
Coach Rex Ryan's three-ring circus at QB now includes a half dozen passers. The others are Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.
"I hope they're all thinking, 'Hey, I have an opportunity to go win a job,'" Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.
Smith certainly is.
"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback," he said. "But as of now, there's lots of work to be done."
Smith put up great numbers in college but also had accuracy issues and fumbled the ball an alarming 32 times, and scouts also questioned his overall skills and leadership in some pre-draft reports.
"You know what," Smith said, "critics don't have a pick."
SUPER SELECTIONS
Will the Harbaugh brothers be making plans for another family reunion in February? Both Baltimore and San Francisco restocked for another Super Bowl run.
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome launched a defensive makeover after Lewis retired and Reed led a free agency exodus following their title, signing with Houston. Newsome used his first four picks and six of 10 selections on defenders, beginning with safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown, who have some huge cleats to fill.
San Francisco's 11-player haul included defensive back Eric Reid, defensive end Tank Carradine and tight end Vance McDonald, but the most intriguing pick was that of fourth-rounder Marcus Lattimore. The South Carolina running back suffered a career-threatening right knee injury last season just one year after tearing ligaments in his left knee.
San Francisco took a similar gamble several years ago when it spent a third-round selection on Frank Gore, who had suffered torn ligaments in each of his knees a year apart at the University of Miami, but has made the Pro Bowl four times and is the franchise's all-time leading rusher.
"I love the aggressive mental approach he has taken through this whole process, but we're going to slow down the aggressive physical things and make sure Marcus is 100 percent healthy before he goes out there on the field," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "If he doesn't play this year, then he doesn't play this year."
REMAKING ROSTERS
The heavy turnover after last season ? eight new coaches and seven new general managers ? meant there were plenty of newbies making draft decisions.
Led by the Chiefs new brain trust of coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey, eight of the top 11 picks were made by teams that had turnover at the decision-making positions as the Jaguars, Eagles, Browns, Cardinals, Bills, Jets and Chargers also had a first-year coach and/or general manager.
Of those, the biggest splash was made by the Bills when GM Buddy Nix gave new coach Doug Marrone a new QB by trading out of the eighth spot and selecting Florida State's Manuel.
"If we can develop this guy, he has the talent to take you to the dance," Nix said.
Other than the decision to take a chance on Manti Te'o in the second round, the Chargers rookie tandem of GM Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy added right tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama with the 11th pick and Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the third round, two players who should help embattled QB Philip Rivers right away.
BUSTS OR BRONZE
For all the money and hours spent watching tape and workouts, evaluating players' bodies and minds, recording height, weight, speed and strength, the draft remains an inexact science. There will be first-round busts like always and maybe some undrafted guys end up with bronze busts in Canton, Ohio.
"You never really know because you're dealing with humans," Elway said.
The Broncos have had at least one college free agent make the 53-man roster coming out of camp every year since 2004, but it's going to be hard for any of Denver's 15 undrafted additions to make it this year after Denver loaded up in free agency and the draft after a 13-3 season.
Elway wasn't called on to close the sale on any of the free agent candidates. He learned his lesson when he bought his first car dealership many years ago and a salesman called him in to seal the deal.
"So I go in and the guy says, 'You've got a lot more money than I do. Why would I want to pay you $1,000?" Elway recounted. "I said, 'OK, you can have it for $500.'
"So, ever since then, I've stayed out of the negotiating business."

Sony's VAIO T13 was a sub-$1000 Ultrabook with an eye on the education market. While we were impressed by the results, its low price meant that compromises had to be made -- especially in the keyboard department. In fact, we were saddened to see that it was packing shallow keys and weirdly wide spacing that made it uncomfortable to type on. But if you were one of those back-to-schoolers who bought one, what did you think of it and what would you have changed about it?

Apr. 29, 2013 ? As cicadas on the East Coast begin emerging from their 17-year slumber, a spritz of dew drops is all they need to keep their wings fresh and clean.
Researchers at Duke University and James Cook University in Australia have shown that dew drops can be beneficial not only in cleaning cicada wings, but other water-repellant surfaces. On these so-called superhydrophobic surfaces, dew drops "jump" by themselves, carrying away the contaminants.
A team led by Chuan-Hua Chen, Alfred M. Hunt Faculty Scholar and assistant professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, demonstrated that tiny particles such as pollen can be removed from cicada wings by a phenomenon he has described as jumping droplets. When growing dew drops coalesce together, the merged drop jumps off water-repellant surfaces. The jumping motion is automatic, powered entirely by the surface energy initially stored in the dew drops.
Using a specially designed high-speed video imaging system, the engineers captured the jumping water droplets on a cicada wing, as well as the associated self-cleaning processes.
"The ability of water-repellant surfaces to self-clean has conventionally been attributed to rain droplets picking up dirt particles," Chen said. "For this conventional wisdom to work, rainfall must be present and the orientation has to be favorable for gravity to effectively remove the rain droplets. These limits severely restrict the practical use of self-cleaning superhydrophobic surfaces.
"We have found, however, that the self-propelled jumping motion of the dew drops is very effective in dislodging contaminating particles, regardless of the orientation," Chen said. "These new insights can help guide the development of man-made surfaces that are not dependent on any external forces and are therefore truly self-cleaning."
The results of Chen's research were published online in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Katrina Wisdom, a Duke undergraduate and a Pratt Research Fellow in Chen's lab at the time of this study, was the paper's co-first author.
Cicadas are flying insects typically a few inches long. The most common species emerge on a yearly basis, with some U.S. species arriving every 17 years. When they dig out from underground as nymphs they molt, shedding their skin to reveal their wings. They then take flight as full-grown cicadas, spending the next four to six weeks flying around searching for and attracting mates with their distinctive song. After depositing eggs in the ground, the cicadas die and the cycle begins anew.
Cicada wings are characterized by rows and rows of tiny bumps or domes of various heights and widths. They look like upside-down ice cream cones, with the conical tips projecting upward. When a water droplet lands on this type of surface, it only touches the points of the bumps, creating pockets of air underneath the droplet. The droplet is kept aloft by this cushion of air, much like the puck in an air-hockey game.
"Most cicadas are unable to clean their own wings because of their short appendages," said Gregory Watson of James Cook University. "Furthermore, these insects commonly live in areas where there is little rain over an extended period of time. However, the areas are humid, which provides the tiny dew droplets needed to 'jump clean' their wings."
"These findings point to an alternative route to achieve self-cleaning which is fundamentally different from the conventional wisdom involving rolling or colliding droplets on a superhydrophobic surface," Chen said. "Self-cleaning surfaces using the jumping-drop mechanism can work at any orientation, which is a huge advantage for applications with unfavorable orientations with respect to gravity, such as mobile electronics and building roofs."

MADRID (AP) ? A Dutch citizen arrested in northeast Spain on suspicion of launching what is described as the biggest cyberattack in Internet history operated from a bunker and had a van capable of hacking into networks anywhere in the country, officials said Sunday.
The suspect traveled in Spain using his van "as a mobile computing office, equipped with various antennas to scan frequencies," an Interior Ministry statement said.
Agents arrested him Thursday in the city of Granollers, 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Barcelona, complying with a European arrest warrant issued by Dutch authorities.
He is accused of attacking the Swiss-British anti-spam watchdog group Spamhaus whose main task is to halt ads for counterfeit Viagra and bogus weight-loss pills reaching the world's inboxes.
The statement said officers uncovered the computer hacker's bunker, "from where he even did interviews with different international media."
The 35-year-old, whose birthplace was given as the western Dutch city of Alkmaar, was identified only by his initials: S.K.
The statement said the suspect called himself a diplomat belonging to the "Telecommunications and Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Republic of Cyberbunker."
Spanish police were alerted in March by Dutch authorities of large denial-of-service attacks being launched from Spain that were affecting Internet servers in the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the U.S. These attacks culminated with a major onslaught on Spamhaus.
The Netherlands National Prosecution Office described them as "unprecedentedly serious attacks on the nonprofit organization Spamhaus."
The largest assault clocked in at 300 billion bits per second, according to San Francisco-based CloudFlare Inc., which Spamhaus enlisted to help it weather the onslaught.
Denial-of-service attacks overwhelm a server with traffic, jamming it with incoming messages. Security experts measure the attacks in bits of data per second. Recent cyberattacks ? such as the ones that caused persistent outages at U.S. banking sites late last year ? have tended to peak at 100 billion bits per second, one third the size of that experienced by Spamhaus.
Netherlands, German, British and U.S. police forces took part in the investigation leading to the arrest, Spain said.
The suspect is expected to be extradited from Spain to face justice in the Netherlands.

NEW YORK (AP) - A couple of baserunners stranded at the end. A pair of untimely walks. A fly ball that ticked off the center fielder's glove.
Once again, the Toronto Blue Jays did just enough to lose a close game.
The New York Yankees beat the last-place Blue Jays 5-4 Saturday, winning when Travis Hafner hit a three-run homer and later lumbered around the bases for a go-ahead triple in the seventh inning.
Toronto lost its season-high third in a row, all to the Yankees. At 9-16, with a team batting average of .229 and a club ERA of 4.50, the numbers are hardly adding up to what the revamped Blue Jays expected, even with star shortstop Jose Reyes on the disabled list.
"You know what, right now we're not good enough. It's that simple," manager John Gibbons said.
"It's frustrating. I'm giving you guys the same comments every stinking day and I'm getting a little bit tired of it," he said. "I've got no answers."
Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie homered for the Blue Jays, who dropped to 1-5 on their seven-game road trip to Baltimore and New York. Each loss has been by one or two runs.
"There comes a time in every game where you've got to make a big pitch or you've got to get a big hit. That's eluded us all year long," Gibbons said.
"Every game we're in - I think that 16 of them have been decided by two or less runs. Part of the time has been defense, but there also comes a time where you've got to make a big pitch or you've got to get a big hit. It's that simple," he said.
Vernon Wells delivered another key hit against his former team. And with Mariano Rivera getting a day off to rest, Joba Chamberlain worked around a pair of one-out singles in the ninth for his first save since 2010.
A day after Toronto pitchers walked a majors-high 10 this season, J.A. Happ's control doomed him. He walked Wells and Kevin Youkilis to open the fourth and Hafner followed with his sixth home run that made it 3-all.
"It's something that can't happen," Happ said. "Maybe I was trying to overanalyze out there, set myself down to bring myself up, but we're well beyond that point. I've just got to figure it out quicker."
"It can't happen and I think that's the bottom line," he said.
Happ left after the sixth with a 4-3 lead. Still, he thought giving up three runs was too many.
"I thought I could do better than that. Every little bit helps. We're obviously struggling in these close games, it would have been nice," he said.
A double by Robinson Cano and an RBI single by Wells evened it in the seventh against Esmil Rogers (1-2). Toronto brought in lefty reliever Brett Cecil to face the lefty-swinging Hafner with two outs and Wells on third.
Hafner hit a high drive that ticked off center fielder Rajai Davis' glove as he approached the padded wall. The 35-year-old Hafner kept running and pulled into the third with a standup triple.
"I don't know if anybody catches it. Do you think anybody catches that ball?" Gibbons said.
Hafner exhaled as he stood on the bag. Captain Derek Jeter, one of several injured Yankees, laughed along with Hafner and his teammates from the dugout.
Hafner has hit three triples in the last six seasons - the other two came last year with Cleveland.
CC Sabathia (4-2) allowed three earned runs and nine hits in eight innings. He walked none, struck out four and improved to 14-4 overall against Toronto.
Bautista hit his seventh home run, a leadoff drive in the fourth. He had been 1 for 20 lifetime against Sabathia with eight strikeouts before connecting.
The Blue Jays scored another run in the fourth. Edwin Encarnacion tagged up at third on Lawrie's fly ball to right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, and was safe at the plate when catcher Chris Stewart dropped the ball while making the tag for an error.
Bautista nearly homered again in the eighth, but center fielder Brett Gardner caught his fly at the top of the wall.
Lawrie put Toronto ahead when he homered to begin the sixth. Lawrie started the season on the disabled list and hit his first homer of the season Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
NOTES: Blue Jays RHP R.A. Dickey (2-3, 4.66 ERA) was set to pitch Sunday vs. RHP Phil Hughes (0-2, 5.14). Dickey won the NL Cy Young Award last year with the Mets, and might draw some crosstown fans for his start at Yankee Stadium. ... Blue Jays DH-1B Adam Lind is expected to come off the paternity list Sunday. ... Bautista has three hits over the last four games, all home runs.

Placement of 5-ton cupola tops off new building at McDonogh School
The Edward St. John Learning Center, a 75,000-square-foot building currently under construction at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, was ?topped off? last week when the contractor, the Lutherville-based Mullan Contracting Co., placed a five-ton cupola on the roof of the four-story structure. The Learning Center features flexible spaces to accommodate dining, classes, meetings, lectures, grade-level gatherings and special events. The 30-foot-high, 12-foot-wide octagonal cupola was constructed by the Cheyenne Co., of Bloomfield, Conn. Concurrently, Mullan is also erecting the Naylor Building, a three-story, 56,000-square-foot structure containing primarily science, technology, engineering and math classrooms. McDonogh, a coeducational, private day and boarding school, has a current enrollment of nearly 1,300 students.
Three Anne Arundel companies donate walkway to nonprofit
Providence Center, a nonprofit organization in Glen Burnie that serves adults with developmental disabilities, unveiled a new walkway at its Jean Bradbury Building greenhouses in Arnold. The walkway was donated by Chaney Enterprises of Waldorf, Belgard Hardscapes of Harmans, and Garner Exteriors of Lothian as part of a do-it-yourself demonstration for installing pavers to nearly two dozen homeowners last Saturday. The approximate value of the new walkway is more than $8000, the entire cost of which was donated by the three companies. ?It?s always great to work on projects like this that will benefit an important nonprofit like Providence Center,? said Garner Exteriors? David Jochnowitz. Providence Center operates four facilities in Anne Arundel County to provide nearly 500 developmentally challenged adults with skills such as horticulture, woodshop and pottery.

A new tenant has signed a lease that will increase occupancy to 80 percent by end of April. More leases are expected to be signed over the next 18-24 months, bringing the building to full occupancy.
Realtor to head Maryland GOP
Diana Waterman, a Queen Anne?s County Realtor, has been elected chairwoman of the Maryland Republican Party. Waterman was elected Saturday at the party?s spring convention in Timonium. She will serve out the term of Alex Mooney, a former state senator who announced in February that he was stepping down from the post. Waterman has been serving as interim chairwoman. She told The Washington Post that she is committed to making the party more competitive. Democrats hold a 2-to-1 advantage in voter registration statewide. The Democrat party also holds the governor?s office and controls both chambers of the state legislature by wide margins.
Students document W.Md. historic sites
Photography students at Allegany College of Maryland are documenting historic buildings in Cumberland with help from the Maryland Historical Trust. The state agency has awarded the city a $7,200 grant to create a photographic record of historic assets. City officials say students in a digital photography class at the college are working this month on the project. They?re photographing buildings in the downtown Canal Place Preservation District and the West Side. Canal Place is a tourism development near the western end of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
ODEC plans electricity plant in Cecil
Old Dominion Electric Cooperative, of Glen Allen, Va., a wholesale power supplier, said it is planning to build a state-of-the-art, natural gas-fueled, electric generation facility in Cecil County. The plant would be built five miles west of Rising Sun, adjacent to ODEC?s existing Rock Springs Generation Facility, which became operational in 2003. Plans call for the plant to start operating in 2017. ODEC said it is currently working with Cecil County government on the proposal and will apply in May for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the Maryland Public Service Commission. ODEC?s 11 nonprofit electric distribution cooperatives serve 1.2 million people in Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.

Accokeek building to set high standard
A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for an energy-efficient building in Prince George?s County. Prince George?s County Executive Rushern Baker and Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown were among officials scheduled to attend the ceremony in Accokeek for the Potomac Watershed Study Center. The building is being touted as one of the most environmentally friendly in the world. When it is finished, supporters say it will take green buildings to a new level by being a net-zero water, net-zero energy and carbon neutral facility. It?s the region?s first Living Building. Now, there are only three certified Living Buildings in the world.
PERSONNEL?
Terry Burns, a senior associate at the Baltimore landscape architectural firm of Mahan Rykiel Associates, has been named as the inaugural winner of the firm?s first annual Founder?s Travel Fund. The fund was established by Catherine Mahan, the now-retired founder and president of MRA. Mahan said she wanted to give something lasting to the firm when she retired, and thought that landscape architects could benefit from travel and the insights they gained from seeing a broad range of built and natural landscapes in the U.S. and abroad. Burns will spend the next year exploring the Prairie School style of landscape design, which focuses on elements of visual expression through natural materials. He has planned trips to cities in the East and Midwest, as well as visits to projects by well-known landscape architects.
Jones Lang LaSalle, a national real estate services and investment management firm, announced that Mark G. Levy has assumed an additional role as head of the firm?s Baltimore operations. Levy will be responsible for managing and overseeing all company service lines and driving strategic growth in the Baltimore region. The U.S. Olympic Committee is talking to 10 cities about a possible bid for the 2024 Summer Games, including a joint proposal from San Diego and Mexican neighbor Tijuana.
Following failed bids for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, the USOC sent out letters to 35 American cities in February to gauge interest in a potential run for 2024.
"We're in discussion with about 10 cities actively now," USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun said in an interview after speaking to the Associated Press Sports Editors in New York. "The process is really working the way it was supposed to."
Los Angeles, which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, and Philadelphia have announced their interest. The mayor of Tulsa, Okla., Dewey Bartlett, told the USOC in a letter last month the city would be interested in submitting a bid with a "Native America theme."
Blackmun said San Diego and Tijuana have also approached the USOC about a joint bid. He declined to identify other cities considered as potential candidates, saying they preferred to keep it confidential for now. Three cities, including Chicago, have formally said they are not interested in bidding.
Blackmun said he would be surprised if any other cities came forward at this point.
"We don't want to submit a bid we don't think we can win," Blackmun told the APSE gathering. "We have to assess our chances. ... We want this bid to be a national bid, an American, bid, not just a city bid. We want to make sure we have been as inclusive as possible."
The United States hasn't hosted a Summer Olympics since the 1996 Atlanta Games. New York mounted a failed bid for the 2012 Games, which went to London, and Chicago suffered a stinging first-round defeat in the IOC vote for the 2016 Olympics, which were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.
The USOC has since reached a revenue-sharing agreement with the IOC, ending a long-running dispute that contributed to the failed bids. With relations back on track and the USOC working to increase its international presence, the chances for a successful U.S. bid in 2024 are considered vastly improved.
"We've got plenty of time," Blackmun told the AP. "There are no specific deadlines on this process."
The USOC official said a joint bid can work in some geographical areas, citing the Bay Area and the cities of San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose as a "natural" possibility.
As for San Diego and Tijuana, he said, "That would have its challenges. We haven't looked at it carefully. We just learned about it."
Blackmun said he understood why Chicago is not interested in bidding again. The city spent about $90 million on the 2016 bid and not even the presence of President Barack Obama at the IOC session in Copenhagen, Denmark, was enough to prevent the humbling defeat.
New York, meanwhile, could be a strong contender in 2024, Blackmun said.
"New York is a global iconic city with a very diverse population and could do a fantastic job of hosting the games," Blackmun said, adding a bid will likely depend on the result of the Big Apple's mayoral election in November.
The USOC has said it plans to decide by the end of 2014 whether to submit a bid. The International Olympic Committee will select the 2024 host city in 2017. Other potential 2024 contenders include Paris and a city in South Africa.
"The games should definitely go to Africa someday," Blackmun said. "If we bid for 2024, I hope they don't go to Africa in 2024."
On other issues, Blackmun said he supports keeping wrestling in the Olympics after the sport was removed from the program of the 2020 Games by the IOC executive board in February. Wrestling is now competing against seven other sports for an opening on the 2020 program.
Blackmun said he also supports the inclusion of women's softball. Baseball and softball, which have been out of the Olympics since the 2008 Beijing Games, have merged to mount a joint bid for 2020 reinstatement. The IOC board will decide next month which sport or sports to recommend for inclusion, with a final vote by the IOC assembly in September.
"Softball needs the Olympics," Blackmun said. "I feel strongly that both wrestling and women's softball should be in the games. You can't get both. It's not a perfect world."
Blackmun said he's confident NHL players will take part in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. NHL players have participated in the past four Winter Games, shutting down the league for two weeks.
Negotiations between the league and international ice hockey officials have yet to produce an agreement for Sochi, though the signs are positive.
"I know the players want it ? both the players who would go to Sochi and those that would get two weeks off," Blackmun said.

There?s a rogue superhero on the loose in Hollywood.
Police are on the hunt for Spider-Man after the masked web-slinger snatched a paper bag filled with $6,000 in cash and credit card information from an employee of the Starlines Tour Bus company.
See original report at NBCLosAngeles.com
It happened Friday morning as the worker was leaving the firm?s Hollywood Boulevard headquarters, said Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Rich Galbaldon, a watch commander at the Hollywood Division.
Hoping their web-head didn?t make it too far, police have been rounding up other Spidey impersonators who were seen milling about in the area, which sits near the TCL Chinese Theatre, formerly Grauman's, a tourist mecca.
So far, no arrests have been made.
Other local superheroes -- among them Superman, Batman and Catwoman -- have said they would help the police in the search for the masked felon around the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Starline Tours is the oldest and largest sightseeing tour company in Los Angeles, according to its website. It offers tours of Hollywood, the city of LA, and tours of celebrity homes.
This isn't the only shady Spidey to act out on Hollywood Boulevard.
In 2009, a Spider-Man impersonator hit a man in the face and arms.

Twenty adopted Russian children have died at the hands of their American parents.
This is the justification Russia gives for banning U.S. adoption of Russian-born children.
Russia?s commissioner for human rights, democracy and rule of law, Konstantin Dolgov, met with U.S. officials April 17 and 18 to discuss international adoption policy according to Turkish Weekly.
U.S. congressional sources say Russia refuses to complete adoptions that were in progress before the ban on Jan. 1.
?I feel so sorry for the families and the children this (law) affects,? said Tim Rouse, projects manager for the administration division at Guilford College, who adopted newborn Cassidy Jane from Florida this year.
?I can tell you from experience that, when you lose a placement that you really believed was going to happen, it can be devastating,? said Rouse. ?For some, it is just as painful as having a miscarriage. It is heartbreaking. A better solution has to be out there.?
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the ban in December in retaliation of the U.S. Magnitsky Act passed late last year, named after a Moscow lawyer who died in a Russian prison, according to National Journal. This law denies visas to Russians accused of human rights violations and freezes their assets in the U.S.
At least 700 American families have filed for adoption with the Russian government and are now waiting for the ban to end according to Jan Wondra, vice chair for Families for Russian and Ukrainian Adoption.
Of these families, an estimated 230 have already visited their prospective children and now worry whether they ever will again.
Time and money are another flaw in the long process of adoption.
?There?s a lot of money that changes hands in going to adopt,? said Christine Lawe who adopted her daughter Anya from China in an interview with the Guilfordian.
?Is it going directly to support that orphanage? Are people?s palms being greased?? said Lawe. ?You do not know where your money is going to so there is something uncomfortable about that.?
Over 600,000 Russian children currently live outside the custody of their biological parents according to The New York Times. Although most live in foster homes, more than 130,000 live in Russia?s orphanage center, including many with mental and physical health problems.
?If you are going to adopt, you should adopt from wherever it?s needed most,? said Early College student Thomas Lawe, Anya?s brother. ?(Adopt from a country) where orphanages are not a good place to be.?
After the ban, filmmaker Olga Loginova for Radio Free Europe visited her biological daughter?s adopted mother, Tina Traster, to make a documentary proving that successful Russian adoptions do exist, according to The Daily Beast.
?No one denies that 20 deaths of Russian-adopted children is a disturbing statistic,? wrote Traster in her Women in the World article for the Daily Beast. ?Something is not right ? I know this because I adopted a child from Russia and because I speak to other adoptive parents of Russian children all the time.?
Less than two months after this law took effect, three-year-old Mad Shatto, adopted from Russia, was found dead outside his Texas home.
Supporters of the ban claim Shatto was murdered by his adoptive mother, though Texas investigators determined his death was a self-inflicted accident, according to the New York Times.
Regardless, in the eyes of Russian President Putin, this is yet another case of an adopted Russian child dying on U.S. soil.
In the eyes of Russian foster children, however, it is slamming the door shut on the home and family they almost had.
?To me, adopted children are more than loved, they are chosen,? said Rouse. ?The only other person that we get to choose to be a part of our family is our spouse. And to me, that makes the relationship all the more special.?

(Reuters) - European regulators declined to approve marketing of Pfizer Inc's new rheumatoid arthritis treatment Xeljanz, citing the risks of the drug compared with its potential benefit, the company said on Thursday.
Pfizer said it plans to appeal and "immediately seek a re-examination of the opinion" by the European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP).
Shares of Pfizer, which rose 1 percent to close at $30.26 on the New York Stock Exchange, were down 2.7 percent at $29.45 after hours.
The rejection will cut about 3 percent from future earnings per share estimates for the drugmaker, said ISI Group analyst Mark Schoenebaum in a note to investors. He also said "history teaches that the odds are against them," in terms of the company's planned appeal.
Pfizer said in a statement that the committee considered that treatment with Xeljanz improved the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and the physical function of patients but did not believe that a consistent reduction in disease activity and structural damage to joints had been sufficiently demonstrated.
The CHMP also raised questions about side effects including serious infections, gastrointestinal perforations and malignancies observed in trials of the pill.
Xeljanz is approved in the United States, Japan and Russia for the treatment of adults with moderate-to-severe active rheumatoid arthritis.
As a twice-daily pill, analysts have said, Xeljanz could prove more attractive to some patients than current drugs such as AbbVie Inc's $8 billion-a-year Humira, which is given by injection every other week.
Pfizer's drug works by blocking molecules called Janus kinases, which are linked to joint inflammation.
Rheumatoid arthritis and related diseases have been one of the most lucrative segments for drugmakers, with more than $20 billion in annual sales.
The disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the body's own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, causing inflammation and pain in the joints.

One of the things that will never fail to make me happy: seeing people stuck in time explain what modern day technology is. Kim Komando hosted an educational series about computer and explains the basics of its hardware, DOS, Microsoft Windows, Writeand more.
A few of my avorite quotes:
"What happens when you press the wrong button? Does it blow up?"
"That's how simple DOS is. It's like house cleaning"
"This is called pointing. There's also click"
"We're going to use the clock program now"
"It's not tough to use a computer. And nothing even blew up!"
Gotta love the people educating the Luddites of the tech world who thought if anything messed up in your computer, you'd get blown up. What's amazing is that Kim Komando still hosts a radio show about technology (as it is still on the air). [Komando via DeeprUnderstanding via Laughing Squid]

While Snapdragon 600 is already showing up on various flagship devices like the HTC One, PadFone Infinity, Galaxy S 4, Optimus G Pro and Xiaomi 2S, we're still looking forward to the big daddy of Qualcomm's lineup this year: the Snapdragon 800. At a media event in Beijing earlier today, Senior Product Manager Yufei Wang confirmed that his company's next flagship SoC will enter mass production in late May, but he refused to comment on which upcoming devices will feature it. And due to the current state of the silicon (even though vendors like ZTE are already sampling it), we weren't allowed to run any benchmark tests on the Snapdragon 800 development devices on display just yet, though we've been told to stay tuned in June.
What makes the 800 shine brighter than the 600 is its more powerful Krait 400 architecture, which can maintain a clock speed of up to 2.3GHz; but like before, the four cores are also clocked asynchronously for better power management. On top of that, the 800 comes with the new Adreno 330 graphics processor with 30fps 4K playback capability, while still featuring the improved Adreno 320's FlexRender technology that can dynamically switch between direct rendering and binning rendering for optimized performance and efficiency. We'll save the nitty-gritty for the proper launch of this 28nm chip later this year.

One example of this I?ve seen three times in the last few days is?this article from moneynews.com, in which economist Robert Wiedemer is proclaiming that the stock market is on the verge of a 90% loss in value. His evidence for this is that some large-scale investors appear to have sold some blue chip stocks in recent days.
Here?s the truth about any article you read or video you see from someone who is announcing such economic doom:?they?re either trying to sell you something or they?re trying to make a profit for themselves.
For example, in that article, the only links a person can find are links either to videos of Wiedemer promoting his book?Aftershock?or direct links to an order page so you can buy that book for yourself. Apr. 25, 2013 ? Scientists have determined the temperature near the Earth's centre to be 6000 degrees Celsius, 1000 degrees hotter than in a previous experiment run 20 years ago. These measurements confirm geophysical models that the temperature difference between the solid core and the mantle above, must be at least 1500 degrees to explain why the Earth has a magnetic field. The scientists were even able to establish why the earlier experiment had produced a lower temperature figure.
The results are published on 26 April 2013 in Science.
The research team was led by Agn?s Dewaele from the French national technological research organization CEA, alongside members of the French National Center for Scientific Research CNRS and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF in Grenoble (France).
The Earth's core consists mainly of a sphere of liquid iron at temperatures above 4000 degrees and pressures of more than 1.3 million atmospheres. Under these conditions, iron is as liquid as the water in the oceans. It is only at the very centre of the Earth, where pressure and temperature rise even higher, that the liquid iron solidifies. Analysis of earthquake-triggered seismic waves passing through the Earth, tells us the thickness of the solid and liquid cores, and even how the pressure in the Earth increases with depth. However these waves do not provide information on temperature, which has an important influence on the movement of material within the liquid core and the solid mantle above. Indeed the temperature difference between the mantle and the core is the main driver of large-scale thermal movements, which together with the Earth's rotation, act like a dynamo generating the Earth's magnetic field. The temperature profile through the Earth's interior also underpins geophysical models that explain the creation and intense activity of hot-spot volcanoes like the Hawaiian Islands or La R?union.
To generate an accurate picture of the temperature profile within the Earth's centre, scientists can look at the melting point of iron at different pressures in the laboratory, using a diamond anvil cell to compress speck-sized samples to pressures of several million atmospheres, and powerful laser beams to heat them to 4000 or even 5000 degrees Celsius."In practice, many experimental challenges have to be met," explains Agn?s Dewaele from CEA, "as the iron sample has to be insulated thermally and also must not be allowed to chemically react with its environment. Even if a sample reaches the extreme temperatures and pressures at the centre of the Earth, it will only do so for a matter of seconds. In this short timeframe it is extremely difficult to determine whether it has started to melt or is still solid."
This is where X-rays come into play. "We have developed a new technique where an intense beam of X-rays from the synchrotron can probe a sample and deduce whether it is solid, liquid or partially molten within as little as a second, using a process known diffraction," says Mohamed Mezouar from the ESRF, "and this is short enough to keep temperature and pressure constant, and at the same time avoid any chemical reactions."
The scientists determined experimentally the melting point of iron up to 4800 degrees Celsius and 2.2 million atmospheres pressure, and then used an extrapolation method to determine that at 3.3 million atmospheres, the pressure at the border between liquid and solid core, the temperature would be 6000 +/- 500 degrees. This extrapolated value could slightly change if iron undergoes an unknown phase transition between the measured and the extrapolated values.
When the scientists scanned across the area of pressures and temperatures, they observed why Reinhard Boehler, then at the MPI for Chemistry in Mainz (Germany), had in 1993 published values about 1000 degrees lower. Starting at 2400 degrees, recrystallization effects appear on the surface of the iron samples, leading to dynamic changes of the solid iron's crystalline structure. The experiment twenty years ago used an optical technique to determine whether the samples were solid or molten, and it is highly probable that the observation of recrystallization at the surface was interpreted as melting.
"We are of course very satisfied that our experiment validated today's best theories on heat transfer from the Earth's core and the generation of the Earth's magnetic field. I am hopeful that in the not-so-distant future, we can reproduce in our laboratories, and investigate with synchrotron X-rays, every state of matter inside the Earth," concludes Agn?s Dewaele.
