PG community collects belts to uphold decorum

Prince George?s County community leaders frustrated by the precariously low waistbands of young men are collecting belts this month to put a stop to sagging pants.

As part of the first Pull ?Em Up campaign, the Take Charge Foundation program is leading a belt drive at 13 locations across the county where people can donate new or gently used belts that will be used to make students? pants sit at their waists.

Take Charge Executive Director Jerrod Mustaf said the goal of the belt drive is to ?modify the culture of young people who believe it?s cool to wear the pants that are sagging.?

?When we look at positive role models in our community, you don?t see any positive men dressing like this,? Mr. Mustaf said. ?That should tell you something.?

Take Charge is a nonprofit organization based in Prince George?s County that focuses on helping families and their children avoid bad choices and behavior that can lead to jail.

The look got its start behind prison walls, where baggy jumpsuits hung off inmates? bodies without the aid of a belt. According to reports, the fashion also was used as a prisoner signal for sexual advances.

Darryl Barnes, founder of Men Aiming Higher, an organization for at-risk youths, said that if young men knew the history of the sagging pants fashion, ?they wouldn?t want them hanging down.?

The problem, he said, is that most of the boys who follow this trend often live in single-parent homes and have to deal with social and economic challenges, not to mention peer pressure.

With the belt drive, Mr. Barnes said, ?we?re really trying to educate these young men on the importance of appearance, the importance of projection, the importance of talking to people.?

Mr. Mustaf sees parents who idolize hip-hop artists sporting baggy trousers as part of the problem.

?It?s so disheartening. You find a lot of parents who are younger, who watch Jay-Z on an awards show or Lil Wayne, and their pants are sagging,? Mr. Mustaf said. ?Parents still listen to and adore these rappers and these musicians.?

When children start wearing sagging pants, Mr. Mustaf said, they argue that these idols are doing it. If their parents also admire those celebrities, Mr. Mustaf said, ?how can you tell your child, don?t be like the person that you like??

At its most basic level, the belt drive can eliminate a youth?s excuse of not having a belt to hold up his pants. One of the other goals of the drive, Mr. Mustaf said, is to let parents know they need to be ?more diligent with respect to what they demand from their children.?

That doesn?t mean parents shouldn?t buy their children clothes to grow into, but ?a mother should not buy pants for her 11-year-old son that are three sizes too big,? Mr. Mustaf said. ?They?ll grow in height, but their waist is not going to grow like that. If it does, it means don?t buy so much food.?

Among the belt drop-off points are the county?s fire and emergency services department, police headquarters, and several middle schools.

Smoking may lead to cataracts in aging population

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Cigarette smoking is a well-known risk factor for a wide-range of diseases. Now, scientists have evidence that smoking may also increase the risk of age-related cataract, the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in the world.

Reported in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, the new findings are the result of a meta-analysis conducted by a team of researchers from China.

"Although cataracts can be removed surgically to restore sight, many people remain blind from cataracts due to inadequate surgical services and high surgery expenses," said author Juan Ye, MD, PhD, of the Institute of Ophthalmology, Zhejiang University in China. "Identifying modifiable risk factors for cataracts may help establish preventive measures and reduce the financial as well as clinical burden caused by the disease."

The team performed the analysis using 12 cohorts and eight case-control studies from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and North America, to compare the prevalence of age-related cataract in individuals who ever smoked cigarettes to those who have never smoked. Further subgroup analyses were performed based on the subjects' status as a past or current smoker and the three subtypes of age-related cataract.

The results showed that every individual that ever smoked cigarettes was associated with an increased risk of age-related cataract, with a higher risk of incidence in current smokers. In the subgroup analysis, former and current smokers showed a positive association with two of the subtypes: nuclear cataract, when the clouding is in the central nucleus of the eye, and subscapular cataract, when the clouding is in the rear of the lens capsule. The analysis found no association between smoking and cortical cataract, in which the cloudiness affects the cortex of the lens.

While the overall analysis suggests that smoking cigarettes may increase the risk of age-related cataracts, the researchers point out that further effort should be made to clarify the underlying mechanisms.

"We think our analysis may inspire more high-quality epidemiological studies" said Ye. "Our analysis shows that association between smoking and the risk of age-related cataract differ by subtypes, suggesting that pathophysiologic processes may differ in the different cataract types."

NEW YORK (AP) ? CC Sabathia boosted the New York Yankees past the Baltimore Orioles, ending a spellbinding six-week drama that drove and drained both teams.

New York advanced to an AL championship series matchup with Detroit, beating Baltimore 3-1 in Game 5 of their AL division series on Friday behind Sabathia's four-hitter.

Andy Pettitte, the career postseason leader with 19 wins, starts Game 1 for the Yankees on Saturday night with a rested bullpen behind him, opposed by Doug Fister. It's a rematch of last year's division series won by the Tigers in five games and provides a platform for Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, baseball's first Triple Crown winner in 45 years.

"I don't know if you can shut him down, but try to keep him from doing too much damage in the series, and that's key to us winning," Pettitte said.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi faces another big decision. After benching slumping Alex Rodriguez for Game 5 against the Orioles, will he insert him back at third base against a Detroit team with four right-handers in its starting rotation?

To get back to the ALCS for the first time in two years, the Yankees had to shake off Baltimore. The teams were separated by no more than a game from Sept. 3-24, the longest September stretch that tight between first- and second-place clubs since the 19th century.

The Yankees had some help from the right field umpire, just as they did against the Orioles in the 1996 ALCS ? hello, Jeffrey Maier.

With New York ahead 1-0 in the sixth, Nate McLouth's drive down the right-field line on a 3-1 pitch was called foul by the slimmest of margins.

Fieldin Culbreth demonstrably waved foul with both arms. Orioles manager Buck Showalter jogged onto the field to ask for a video review, and four umpires went down a tunnel on the third-base side to examine the images on a screen near their dressing room. When they ran back onto the field about two minutes later, they didn't make any signal ? meaning the original call stood. McLouth struck out on the next pitch, ending the inning.

"I saw it go to the right of the pole," Culbreth said. "There is netting there and it didn't touch the netting. It did not change direction," he added, indicating he did not think the ball grazed the pole.

Added crew chief Brian Gorman: "We saw the same thing on the replay. There was no evidence to overturn the decision."

McLouth wondered what the umps would decide.

"It started off fair and it was just hooking a little bit. I thought it was foul just in game speed," McLouth said. "A couple of people mentioned it might've ticked the pole, but he was way closer than I was and I was satisfied after they went down and looked at the replay that it was foul."

Steven Ellis, a fan from the Broad Channel section of Queens, caught the ball with his Yankee cap in the second deck.

"It was foul all the way, never hit the pole," he said.

Back in 1996, the 12-year-old Maier reached over the wall above right fielder Tony Tarasco and deflected Derek Jeter's fly ball. Umpire Richie Garcia called it a home run, which tied the score 4-all in the eighth inning, and the Yankees went on to win in the 11th.

"Just watching at home, I promise," Maier texted to The Associated Press after this play.

Sabathia went on to defeat the Orioles for the second time in six days, Raul Ibanez hit a go-ahead single in the fifth off Jason Hammel after former Baltimore high school star Mark Teixeira singled and swiped second in a rare steal. Diving second baseman Robert Andino just missed gloving Ibanez's hit.

Ichiro Suzuki added an RBI double off the right-center field wall in the sixth. Curtis Granderson boosted the lead to 3-0 with a second-deck solo homer against Troy Patton in the seventh.

Sabathia, who improved to 4-0 in his last eight postseason starts, didn't allow an extra-base hit. He struck out eight, walked two and matched his season high of 121 pitches.

"He didn't pitch all five, but it certainly felt like it, didn't it?" Showalter said.

Sabathia took a one-hit shutout into the eighth but allowed Matt Wieters' leadoff single and Manny Machado's walk. Mark Reynolds struck out, and Lew Ford ? starting at DH in place of Jim Thome ? hit an RBI single.

Andino hit a bouncer to the third-base side that Sabathia gloved, but Eric Chavez left third uncovered and Sabathia's throw to second was late, leaving the bases loaded. With David Robertson warming up in the New York bullpen, McLouth struck out on a changeup and Sabathia escaped when J.J. Hardy hit a slow three-hopper to shortstop that Jeter, playing on a sore left ankle, charged and gloved elegantly before throwing to first just in time.

Sabathia pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, finishing a 121-pitch effort as Wieters hit a comebacker. The Yankees ran out of their dugout to celebrate on the third-base side of the mound and the Orioles walked off slowly and somberly.

"It's been about as much fun as I have had in the big leagues watching how they play the game every day, the standard they held themselves to and the way they raised the bar in Baltimore with each other," said Showalter, who has not reached the LCS in 14 major league seasons.

New York won for the 12th time in 23 meetings between the teams in a matchup so close the Yankees outscored the Orioles 106-102. The teams were within one run of each other at the end of 46 of 52 innings in the division series. New York totaled just 16 runs in the five games and Baltimore 10, ending a dynamic six-week struggle. After 10 different nights in September, the rivals were tied for first.

"They are a very good club and they are a very resilient club," Girardi said. "People thought they were going to go away, they never went away."

NOTES: The crowd of 47,081 was the smallest in 18 postseason games at new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009. ... New York is 11-3 in the ALCS. ... The 26 runs were the fewest in a five-game postseason series since St. Louis (12) and Arizona (10) combined for 22 runs in the 2001 NLDS.

Felix Baumgartner successfully lands after highest freefall from edge of space

ScienceDaily (Oct. 14, 2012) ? Austria's Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday (Oct. 14, 2012) after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,137 km jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records* while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

After flying to an altitude of 39,044 meters (128,097 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed Sunday morning a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out ofhis space capsule at 39,044 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,137 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:19-minute long freefall. Baumgartner's jump lasted a total of 9:03 minutes. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

"It was an incredible up and down today, just like it's been with the whole project," a relieved Baumgartner said. "First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with a power supply issue to my visor. The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I'd just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I'd lose consciousness. I didn't feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We'll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be."

Baumgartner and his team spent five years training and preparing for the mission that is designed to improve our scientific understanding of how the body copes with the extreme conditions at the edge of space. Baumgartner had endured several weather-related delays before finally lifting off under bright blue skies and calm winds on Sunday morning. The Red Bull Stratos crew watching from Mission Control broke out into spontaneous applause when the balloon lifted off.

* The data on the records set by the jump are preliminary pending confirmation from the authorized governing bodies.

What about career conversation for your ... - S. Benjamins & Company

Why is Coaching your employee important?
Excerpt from Fast Company ? Sept 7th
Year after year, surveys find enterprise employees dissatisfied with how they are being supported in their careers. In fact, most of them not only do not feel supported, they often feel downright thwarted. You can see it on websites like Glassdoor, where a company I once worked for is reviewed as

?not great for relationship-building/team-building. Not everyone is always promoted from within. Managers are more concerned with how they look when promoting someone, as opposed to promoting the people who can do the job. But in the end? it?s the stress of the job that?ll do you in, combined with the ridiculous rating system. It?s too easy to get a ?Meets Expectations? regardless of whether you are working your tail off and achieving, or slacking because you?ve been there too long and are burned out, and need a BETTER challenge.

According to Julie Winkle Giulioni, the co-author with Beverly Kaye of Help Them Grow or Watch Them Go, the statistics around employee engagement are scary. Too many employees are burnt out and disengaged. Since engagement drives the willingness to put out discretionary effort, a high percentage of the work population is just going through the motions like the ?human resource? quoted above.

?Once things improve a bit more, we?re going to see a mass exodus from these big companies,? says Giulioni. Even now, while the job market is still tumultuous for most people, the best and brightest people are always sought after, and in danger of being stolen out of their jobs for more promising paths to career development.

Kaye and Giulioni, who both have deep expertise in corporate career management, decided to write their book because they have also seen what?s necessary to reverse this trend, and how easy it would be for managers to keep their best and brightest. The central theme of this books is how managers and leaders can reframe career development and make it a consistent feature in the workplace, not just quarterly or annually. Take this topic to your next management meeting ? what do they think?

(AP) ? Global financial ministers called Saturday for quick and effective action to safeguard faltering economic growth and rebuild shaken confidence as they ended an annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund.

"Global growth has decelerated and substantial uncertainties and downside risks remain," an IMF advisory committee said in a communique. It exhorted advanced economies to carry through with needed structural reforms and "credible fiscal plans."

Decisive action is needed to "break negative feedback loops and restore the global economy to a path of strong, sustainable and balanced growth," it said.

It also urged emerging economies to adapt their own policies to help counter slowing growth in Europe and the United States.

The annual meeting of the IMF and World Bank, convened in Tokyo this year, has highlighted frustrations among many countries over drag on growth from the lingering debt crisis in Europe, plus alarm over a possible blow to the world's largest economy if the U.S. fails to resolve an impasse over its budget deficit.

"A durable solution to the Euro area crisis would provide a much-needed boost to global recovery," Yi Gang, deputy governor of China's central bank told fellow financial leaders at the meeting Saturday of the IMF's International Monetary and Financial Committee.

Yi said uncertainty over government debts in the U.S. and Japan was slowing recovery and causing "costly spillover effects to the rest of the world."

Slower growth elsewhere is sapping the potential in the poorest countries, many of which depend on exports of minerals, oil and other commodities to the industrial countries.

"We should all be committed in our resolve to avoid a worst case scenario where strains in the euro area deepen, fiscal cliff and debt ceiling problems in the U.S. are not resolved, and growth in emerging market economies continues to decline," said Pravin J. Gordhan, South Africa's finance minister.

Christine Lagarde, the IMF's managing director, summed up the meetings saying they yielded "a very strong commitment to policy implementation."

In her "Global Policy Agenda," however, she summed up progress as "mixed." In the 17-nation area of countries that use the euro, measures have fallen short of what is needed to ensure sustainability, it says.

It warns that high levels of government debt will constrain options for fighting recession for years to come.

"A lot has been done, but ? with limited progress in addressing legacy issues such as debt overhangs and weak financial systems and continued uncertainty on key policies ? confidence still has yet to be restored," the agenda says.

While most of the attention during the meeting was focused on the crises facing the biggest economies, the IMF and World Bank ? whose mission is to fight poverty ? have also emphasized the need to help protect the poor from the spillover of slowdowns in richer nations.

The IMF announced it would devote $1.1 billion in funds from windfall sales of gold to help fortify funds for low-cost loans for low-income countries.

Overall, the IMF and its member countries have made progress in shoring up the international financial system, said Tharman Shanmagaratnam, chairman of the IMFC.

"All agreed we are in a better position today than we were six months today, a better position with regard to the policy footing for getting growth restarted and for achieving fiscal consolidation in advanced economies," he said.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said that while the situation in the eurozone remains challenging, positives include the resilience of European banks, the relatively low level of fiscal deficits in member economies and an improvement in governance.

"The bottom line is that the situation remains challenging, but there are signs of prudent optimism," he said.

Still, many participants expressed alarm over the risk of the U.S, the world's biggest economy, running over a "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and deep spending cuts next year unless the Obama administration and Congress resolve a deadlock over the budget.

Such a prospect would deal a heavy blow to the economy, eroding progress made since the 2008 global crisis.

Speaking just hours after the government announced the budget deficit for the 2012 fiscal year topped $1 trillion for a fourth straight year despite stronger tax revenues, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told fellow financial leaders that much remains to be done.

"It is important that we in the U.S. enact a balanced framework to bring down our fiscal deficit and debt over several years, while continuing to provide support for jobs and growth in the short term," Geithner said.

The overwhelming emphasis of the Tokyo gathering has been on coddling fragile growth around the globe.

At Saturday's meeting of the IMFC, which advises the IMF and monitors the world financial system, officials from developing and emerging economies urged the U.S. and European nations to prevent malaise in their regions from slowing global growth.

"Advanced countries should rethink their macroeconomic strategies and avoid simultaneous fiscal contractions and the consequent overburdening of monetary policies," Guido Mantega, Brazil's finance minister, told the committee.

Spending should be focused on areas that can have a maximum impact and on social safety nets to protect the poor, he said.

He also echoed other finance ministers in expressing concern over monetary easing in the U.S. and other countries that is meant to encourage more bank lending but that some worry could destabilize markets while failing to stave off recession.

The meeting ended without a breakthrough on internal reforms of the IMF, a 188-member agency set up in 1944 to provide emergency loans and other support to countries facing economic difficulties calling for reforms.

Lagarde said such reforms, which include adjusting the quotas and relative voting strength of members to reflect changes in world economic heft, are "critical" for ensuring the IMF's legitimacy.

Congress is not hurrying to extend the suspension of the debt tax ...

If a lender reduces your principal mortgage or if conduct a short sale in 2013. Nothing like waiting to the last minute.

By Kenneth R. Harney October 7, 2012

WASHINGTON ? Although the news spotlight has been on the presidential debates and the Nov. 6 elections, a more pressing personal issue for large numbers of homeowners across the country involves the lame-duck congressional session scheduled to begin Nov. 13.

Along with the federal budget, billions in tax increases, draconian spending cuts and efforts to avoid the ?fiscal cliff? looming Dec. 31, the lame-duck session is expected to answer what?s estimated to be a multibillion-dollar question for housing: Will Congress renew the mortgage debt forgiveness tax provisions for owners whose mortgage lenders agree to write off portions of their debt, either as part of loan modifications, foreclosures, short sales or deeds-in-lieu of foreclosure? Without an extension, borrowers who receive reductions in principal next year would be hit with federal income taxes at their regular marginal rates on the amounts forgiven.

During the lame-duck session, lawmakers also will have to deal with a slew of other real estate-related issues, including write-offs for mortgage insurance premiums, tax benefits for homeowners who install energy-saving improvements, tax credits for builders of energy-efficient new houses, and extension of current relief for middle-income taxpayers from the alternative minimum tax, among others.

While President Obama, Republican challenger Mitt Romney and most members of Congress have been campaigning, staffs of key House and Senate tax and finance committees ? along with hordes of lobbyists ? have been working out game plans for the lame-duck session.

One key strategy question: Could the Family and Business Tax Cut Certainty Act of 2012 ? which passed the Senate Finance Committee in August and includes mortgage forgiveness relief and other housing-related tax extensions along with alternative minimum tax relief, research-and-development tax credits and dozens of other targeted tax benefits ? be treated as a stand-alone bill? If not, there?s a strong risk of it getting caught up in the much larger partisan fights over spending, the federal debt ceiling and the whole fiscal-cliff debate.

Senate Democrats reportedly were prepared to bring the bill to the floor for a vote before the election recess, but it never happened. Now the fate of the legislation appears to be up in the air, and House leaders may come up with their own version.

P.E. Students Trade Helmets for Thinking Caps | Jaguar Pride Daily

Like Lewisville ISD, Vickery Elementary believes ?an educated citizenry is essential for equal opportunity and a prosperous society.? Integrated learning that incorporates P.E. and foreign language instruction proves that!

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Vickery Elementary (Vickery) don?t need a helmet to play games when they go to Neetz Lach?s physical education (P.E.) class twice a week. They need their thinking caps. That?s because at Vickery, P.E. isn?t just about getting physical exercise, the class integrates linguistic differential language instruction, so it?s about learning too.

?Due to the diversity of cultures at Vickery, I found it important to expose all students to linguistic differences in language and cultures,? Lach said. ?There are 14 different languages represented by Vickery students. I plan to cover each language for two weeks. Using this schedule, we will be able to cover all 14 languages by the end of the school year.?

Lach engages students when she introduces a new language by showing a video of a person speaking the numbers one through 10 from the country they are learning about. This allows them to hear how the numbers are spoken in that language. To help enforce the language introduced in the video, large posters decorate the walls of the gym for reference. Additionally, the flag of the country and a map showing where it is located is posted.

Like Lewisville ISD, Vickery Elementary believes ?an educated citizenry is essential for equal opportunity and a prosperous society.? Integrated learning that incorporates P.E. and foreign language instruction proves that!

?I ask each class if there is anyone that has come from the country we are studying and, if so, they model counting from one to 10 in their home language,? Lach said. ?Each day, when students come to P.E., they do their warm-ups counting in the language we are currently studying. And, anytime we do an activity inside the gym, or jog outside, students count in the language we are learning.?

Taking the learning one-step further, every student is given a card that includes the languages they have learned. This allows them to study and independently master. At the end of each six weeks, students will be quizzed on the new languages they learned. In addition learning about fitness, these students covered English, Spanish and Thai during the first six weeks of school!

?Students come back to P.E. so excited to share stories about how they showed their parents that they can count in three languages,? Lach said. ?They are delighted to accomplish something that even their parents cannot do! I have noticed they are eager to learn and speak in different languages. When they come to P.E., instead of students asking what we are going to do, they ask what is our new language. I love sharing this experience with them. The smiles on their faces make it all worth while!?

RYAN WINS DEBATE! | Weekly World News

Pundits on all major networks agree? Paul Ryan absolutely destroyed Joe Biden in tonight?s Vice Presidential debate.

The only debate between Vice President Joe Bide and Republican candidate Congressman Paul Ryan, which took place at 9 p.m. in Danville, Kentucky is over and? ?Paul Ryan wiped the floor with Joe Biden, according to all the mainstream media sources.

?It was a total disaster for Biden,? MSNBC?s Chris Matthews screamed. ??What the hell are the doing at the White House? ?Who gave Biden alcohol before the debate? ?This race is over!?

?Paul Ryan won the election tonight,? said former Clinton adviser, James Carville.? ?Joe Biden looked like Admiral Stockdale tonight. ?He barely could form a coherent sentence.?

George Stephanopoulos ?reportedly told views, ?a Vice President hasn?t done this bad since Dan Quayle got beat up by Lloyd Bentsen.?

And in a surprising tweet, Bill Maher reportedly said, ?I am donating one million dollars to Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney. ?My candidates are on too many drugs.?

The debate took place Thursday night, but during the day Joe Biden was looking to score some ?Kentucky bluegrass?? ?I hear it?s really got a kick,? Biden reportedly told some stoners in Lexington.

The debate focused on domestic issues, with particular attention devoted to the economy. ?Paul Ryan repeatedly accused Joe Biden of being a person who wants to take money from the middle-class and run up the debt and deficit.

Not surprisingly, Joe Biden agree. ??Look, we want to raise taxes on everyone. That?s what the patriotic thing to do is. ?Everybody needs to chip in.?

Biden also made a few gaffes, as expected during the debate. ? He said he opposed Obamacare, was pro-life and wanted to make sure ?no woman ever gets a free condom. ?Not in my lifetime!?

In the segment on the ?role of government? Joe Biden told America that he believed that the government should support every American. ??The government can take care of you better than your mother or father. ?That?s a fact!?

Martha Raddatz of ABC was the moderator for the debate. ?She was accused of ?having a bias because she attended Barack Obama?s wedding. ?And she did her best to help Biden out with questions like? ?So, Vice President Biden, you agree that Paul Ryan wants to kill old women and drop bombs on illegal immigrants crossing into America from Mexico??

Raddatz also had tough, leading questions for Ryan: ??So, Mr. Ryan, is it true that you want to mandate that all children carry guns to school??

Even with the help? Ryan obliterated Biden.

Toward the end of the debate, ?Joe Biden surprised American when he turned to Paul Ryan and said, ??You know what? ?You make a lot of sense. ?You?ve got my vote!?

Polls conducted by MSNBC showed that Paul Ryan won the debate with a 99% favorable rating, while ALL the other media in the country had Mitt Romney winning with a 98% favorable rating.

In an unrelated story, President Obama has authorized, by Executive Order, ?triple-voting? in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.?? ?Democrat residents of those states can vote three times,?? White House spokesperson Jay Carney said.

Old adage 'sleep on it' is true -- but only if it's a really difficult problem, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? A new study from Lancaster University has found that sleeping on a problem really can help people to find a solution.

The study, published online this week in the journal Memory & Cognition, tested whether sleep or time spent awake worked best in helping people find the solutions to a range of problem solving tasks.

Participants in the study -- 27 men and 34 women -- were asked to attempt easy and difficult verbal insight problems and, following a period of sleep, time spent wake, or no delay at all, the three groups of participants reattempted previously unsolved problems.

The sleep group solved a greater number of difficult problems than did the other groups, but no difference was found for easy problems.

The authors of the study -- Ut Na Sio, Padraic Monaghan and Tom Ormerod all from the Centre for Research in Human Development and Learning at Lancaster's Department of Psychology -- concluded that sleep facilitates problem solving but this has its primary effect for harder problems.

Professor Padraic Monaghan said: "We've known for years that sleep has a profound effect on our ability to be creative and find new solutions to problems. Our study shows that this sleep effect is greatest when the problems facing us are difficult. Sleep appears to help us solve problems by accessing information that is remote to the initial problem, that may not be initially brought to mind. Sleep has been proposed to 'spread activation' to the solution that is initially distant from our first attempts at the problem. The advice stemming from this and related research is to leave a problem aside if you're stuck, and get some sleep if it's a really difficult problem."

Food Allergy Walk: FAAN | Skinny Mom | Tips for Moms | Fitness ...

On Sunday, September 30, 2012 my family participated for the third year in a row the FAAN walk ? Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Network?s walk around Lincoln Park in Chicago. The participants raise money that goes towards education and research to find a cure for the ever prevalent food allergies. It is a great cause and near and dear to my heart. My six year old son is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts.? We?ve been dealing with these allergies since he was eleven months old. His food allergies keep us on alert and is quite a challenge daily.? It was nice to walk along the beautiful Chicago park among the changing leaves and the lakefront. ?For my son, it was nice to be surrounded by other children with food allergies who also have to sit at the allergy table, carry an Epi-Pen, and avoid many yummy treats.

My children love the free cookies, chips, and candy they hand out to the participating crowds. What is wonderful about these treats is they are allergy friendly treats. Safe treats made in facilities that do not use peanuts or tree nuts. Many of the treats are also dairy and egg free. Some of the allergy-friendly brands that sponsor the FAAN walk for Food Allergy are Enjoy Life, Ians, Divvies and Sunbutter. ?We always stock up on as many samples as we can. My son loves the cookies and seed packets. We all snacked during that walk and that is part of what makes this day special.? Getting an opportunity to walk alongside other families supporting their food allergy family member is a rewarding experience.? Finally, these children have a day to feel special and normal.

One touching story was about Sabrina, a spunky thirteen year old that lost her life after eating French fries in the school cafeteria. Her mother told us the story of her last day and the journey to passing Sabrina?s Law:

?The law, which took effect January 1, 2006, requires school boards to have all principals implement anaphylaxis plans that include: strategies to reduce exposure to allergens, procedures to communicate to parents, students and employees about life-threatening allergies, and regular training on dealing with life-threatening allergies for teachers and staff.

In addition, principals are required to: develop an individual plan for each student at risk of anaphylaxis, maintain a file that lists that student?s prescriptions and emergency contacts and ensure that parents enrolling pupils supply information on a child?s allergies?.? [Allergic Living]

I don?t think I will ever forget the story of Sabrina Shannon.? Every day I send my son to school, I fear he will suffer the same fate. If you are looking for a great cause to support, I encourage you to look into FAAN ? The Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Network. Sign up for the walk near you. You won?t regret it and you will feel the energy, love and support all around you.

Keeping Heart Internet completely UK based

Unlike many other hosting companies, all our staff ? including all levels of our support team ? are based in-house in the UK. As well as creating and maintaining safe jobs here, it also has a positive effect on many other local and national businesses who receive our custom (even web hosts need stationery! And caffeine. Lots of caffeine).

Hiring UK designers

Our in-house team is brilliant, and we?ve also commissioned work from our customers, including two icon sets, one of which is pictured below (download them both for free from our Resources page). We?re planning to expand our involvement in this area significantly over the coming years for the dual benefits of supporting UK designers and helping to provide more excellent high quality resources for you. If you?re a designer or a developer interested in producing premium-quality resources for us in exchange for hosting credit or cold hard cash, please get in touch via marketing [at] heartinternet.co.uk.

Giveaways and contests

In the past two and a half years alone we?ve given away over ?8,500 in useful prizes to lucky winners, including *deep breath* two 27? iMacs, fifteen Amazon, iTunes and Play.com vouchers, ?2847 in web hosting and domain names, a Motorola Xoom tablet, three iPods, three Google Nexus 7 tablets, a MacBook Air and much more!

So next time you buy or renew something from Heart Internet, embrace the warm fuzzy glow. You?re helping to make the creative web industry what it is today.

Netflix Brings ?Just For Kids? UI To The iPad

Netflix_JustForKids_USNetflix has just launched its "Just For Kids" user interface on the iPad, combining two of kids' favorite things: the iPad and cartoons. The Just For Kids UI debuted back in August of 2011, and has since made its way to the Xbox and various Blu-ray players and smart TVs. Children tend to really enjoy the iPad's touch interface, but without any parental controls within the app, you never know when your ten-year-old could go from Phineas & Ferb cartoons to Family Guy.
