Recap: New Mexico St vs. New Mexico

Drew Gordon was unstoppable as he scored 23 points and pulled down 19 rebounds for the Lobos as New Mexico took down the New Mexico State Aggies 89-67 in an in-state clash at the Pan American Center.

Tony Snell led New Mexico (11-2) with 24 points as he made 5-of-9 from the field and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Kendall Williams chipped in 12 points for the Lobos as they won their ninth-straight game.

Wendell McKines did his best to keep New Mexico State (8-5) in the game as he recorded a double-double of his own with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Hamidu Rahman had a solid contribution with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. The loss was the second in a row for the Aggies.

The Aggies trailed by three with 10:57 left in the first period before New Mexico went on a big run to take a 46-25 lead into the intermission. The Lobos shot 41.7 percent from the field and made 8-of-12 from three-point range while New Mexico State shot just 25.7 percent from the field and went 0-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half.

New Mexico continued to produce on the offensive end after the break as it made 50 percent of its field goals and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe in the second half. The Aggies attempted to claw their way back as they scored 20 points in the paint, 15 points off of turnovers, and 16 second chance points in the second half. Despite New Mexico State's improved performance, the Lobos led by as many as 34 and enjoyed a comfortable lead throughout the second half.

Three-point shooting played a big factor as the Lobos poured in 12-of-24 from beyond the arc while the Aggies made just 1-of-14 of their three-point shot attempts.

Singer, actress Kaye Stevens dies in Florida (AP)

THE VILLAGES, Fla. ? Singer and actress Kaye Stevens, who performed with the Rat Pack and was a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's "The Tonight Show," has died at a central Florida hospital. She was 79.

Close friend Gerry Schweitzer confirmed that Stevens died Wednesday at the Villages Hospital north of Orlando following a battle with breast cancer and blood clots.

Stevens, a longtime South Florida resident, performed with Rat Pack members including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop. She also sang solo at venues like Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and the Plaza Hotel's Persian Room in New York City.

During the Vietnam War era, Stevens performed for American soldiers in the war zone with Bob Hope's USO tour.

According to a handout from friend Rhonda Glenn, Stevens was born Catherine Louise Stephens in Pittsburgh. Her family eventually moved to Cleveland, where a teenage Stevens got her start as a drummer and singer. She later married now deceased bandleader and trumpet player Tommy Amato, and the couple performed throughout the eastern U.S.

During a gig in New Jersey, Stevens was discovered by Ed McMahon, Carson's longtime sidekick, which led to new bookings. Her big break came when she was playing a lounge at The Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Debbie Reynolds became ill and was unable to perform in the main room. Stevens filled in and was an instant hit.

Besides singing, Stevens also acted in film and television. She appeared in six movies, earning a Golden Globe nomination in 1964 for "The New Interns." She was a regular celebrity player on game shows and appeared as a regular on "Days of Our Lives" from 1974-79.

During the past two decades, Stevens started her own ministry and began performing only Christian and patriotic music. She staged benefits to help build St. Vincent Catholic Church in her longtime home of Margate, Fla., where city officials named a park in her honor.

New details on the iPhone 5 surface (Digital Trends)

iphone-5-concept-teardropThe iPhone 4S isn?t quite as shiny and new as it was a mere month ago, and in the wake of its now-normalcy come new iPhone 5 rumors. Up until now we?ve been able to gather that the next-gen iPhone will sport a new design, larger display, and that it might be a 4G capable.

Now BGR says it has inside information that the iPhone 5 will be launched in the fall of 2012, and that the new phone will not only have a different look but a different feel. According to the site?s sources, the next iPhone will have ?rubber or plastic? material built into its case as a new take on the device?s bezel. This will accompany a new aluminum back plate and new antenna system.

Until this point, we?ve heard that the iPhone 5 would be released earlier than the iPhone 4S was, perhaps sticking to Apple?s original summer launch schedule. But if BGR is right, that means Apple might have an incredibly busy third quarter. We heard yesterday that the Apple iTV is supposed to debut in the second or third quarter of 2012, which makes us a bit dubious about this roadmap. The iTV and iPhone 5 launches will be huge, chaos-creating events that the media and consumers will revolve around for weeks. Lump these closely and Apple risks cannibalizing some of that attention.

Of course there will be some consumers that have to choose between an iTV and iPhone 5 ? although we?d predict favor would heavily fall to the handset. We don?t expect these two products to launch side-by-side or share the spotlight, and maybe that means we?ll see the iPhone 5 a little earlier than predicted.

As far as the design news goes, the iPhone 5?s form factor has been all over the place since day one. The tear-drop shape rumors persist, and now we can add rubberized bezel and aluminum back plate to the list. It would be a pretty large jump from the current design Apple has follow, and one we can already imagine hearing complaints about.?

Egypt court ends virginity tests on female detainees (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? An Egyptian court ordered on Tuesday that forced virginity tests be stopped on female detainees in military prisons.

The case was filed by Samira Ibrahim, a woman who said the army forced her to undergo a virginity test in March after she was arrested during a protest in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Human rights organizations say that there have been many other such tests by the military.

"The court orders that the execution of the procedure of virginity tests on girls inside military prisons be stopped," said judge Aly Fekry, head of Cairo Administrative court. Hundreds of activists inside the courtroom cheered after the ruling was read out.

Sottile, Kingston's exiting mayor, reflects with pride on his decade in office (video)

Mayor James Sottile is shown in his City Hall office earlier this week. (Freeman photo by Paul Kirby)

KINGSTON ? Around Mayor James Sottile?s office in City Hall, much has disappeared: the photos on bookshelves, framed newspapers on the walls, mementos that once were scattered about.

But the memories of being Kingston?s mayor for nearly a decade will linger for a long, long time for Sottile.

?I have loved being mayor of this city,? said Sottile, who leaves office at the end of this month. ?It has been a dream come true for me.?

Sottile leaves office not sure of what?s next, though he has obtained licenses to sell real estate and insurance. What is certain is that he plans to take a long break from politics.

?I am going to need to unwind ? get out of the fishbowl,? he said during a recent interview in which he recalled the ups and downs, tense times and proud moments of his tenure.

The mayor, a Democrat, has drawn both praise and criticism during his time in office, which began on Jan. 21, 2002, when his predecessor, T.R. Gallo, died in office at age 41. At the time, Sottile was the city?s alderman-at-large, who, according to the charter, becomes mayor in the event of the mayor?s death.

?I remember my first act as mayor was to order the flags at City Hall to fly at half mast for my friend,? Sottile said.

Ward 2 Alderman Thomas Hoffay, a fellow Democrat, said Sottile has done right by the city in a number of ways.

?I have had the privilege of knowing Jim Sottile long before he became mayor of Kingston, and I think he is a great guy with a huge heart and generous spirit,? said Hoffay, the Common Council?s incoming majority leader. Continued...

Hoffay said Sottile should be credited with, among other things, putting the city on firmer financial ground and taking on the repair of failing infrastructure, such as roads and sewer lines.

?He had to right the ship,? Hoffay said.

?His decisions weren?t always popular, but he knew they were the right ones to make and he made them with no apologies,? said Alderman Bill Reynolds, D-Ward 7, the Common Council?s outgoing majority leader.

Sottile has had his critics, too. Kingston Republican Committee Chairman Anthony Sinagra once said he hoped the mayor would run for re-election this past November, arguing that he was so unpopular that a GOP challenger would have a shot at winning.

Sottile ? who won full four-year terms in 2003 and 2007 ? announced a year ago that he would not run again. The man who won the office last month is fellow Democrat Shayne Gallo, the late T.R.?s brother.

Alderwoman Andi Turco-Levin, the council?s outgoing minority leader, said Sottile?s administration has been a mixed bag.

?It?s the good, the bad, and the ugly,? said Turco-Levin, R-Ward 1, who tried unsuccessfully to win the GOP nomination to run for mayor this year. ?There are many things that Jim worked his heart out on, and he did what he felt was best for the city of Kingston.?

But Turco-Levin said clouds over the Sottile administration include continued tax increases, poor planning on property reassessments, no significant movement on developing a city master plan and having to make payments after successful assessment grievances.

?There have been missed opportunities,? said Turco-Levin, who noted plans that never materialized for an Uptown condominium project and a proposed waterfront hotel called the Noah.

Sottile admits those projects were disappointments but points out that he got ?people to the table to talk.? Continued...

He also admits to often getting extremely frustrated and having to ?blow off steam.?

?But I am the kind who would be right back in your office in 10 minutes apologizing,? Sottile said. ?I am a human being. I am a passionate guy.?

At times, Sottile would become angered at something in the media and would dodge reporters? telephone calls. Even so, City Hall under his administration remained transparent, leaving reporters free to get information without hassle and interview department heads at will.

?The fact of the matter is I had no right to tell people they cannot speak to the press,? Sottile said. ?I am not a dictator. I was elected by a community, and the way to get information out to the community is by people talking about what we were doing.?

And Sottile says his administration has done a lot.

He said his success as a politician started while he was alderman-at-large, when he advocated for the construction of a homeless shelter on Thomas Street in Midtown and supported a special tax district to support the Kingston Library.

Seeing the shelter move from a former church basement in the Rondout district to an expanded facility in Midtown, he said, ?was one of my most proud moments.?

He also noted the city was suffering from a $1 million budget shortfall when he took office but that he?s leaving his successor a city with a significantly improved bond rating.

Sottile said he kept his word on pledges to push for new housing of all kinds, affordable and market rate, including in Midtown, where the city partnered with? the Rural Ulster Preservation Co., Ulster YouthBuild and Ulster County Habitat for Humanity. Sottile also insisted that Birchwood Village, an affordable apartment complex on Flatbush Avenue, be open to families.

?I think that if you look at my 10 years, I have been true to my word,? he said. Continued...

Sottile said that pledge is evident in his successes in getting contaminated sites cleaned up and redeveloped. The CVS pharmacy at Washington Avenue and Schwenk Drive and the Walgreens pharmacy on Broadway were built on sites formerly deemed toxic; similarly, a longtime former junk yard on the city?s Rondout Creek waterfront was removed.

Sottile frequently cites as crowning achievements the renovation of the Kirkland Hotel at Main Street and Clinton Avenue, which had stood vacant more than 25 years; water sale agreements with the neighboring town of Ulster; luring a second tenant to the Kingston Business Park off Delaware Avenue; and the establishment of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection?s upstate offices in the former National Micronetics building on Smith Avenue.

Sottile said he is also proud that the Kingston Police Department has been able to keep crime at bay, with the number of reported serious crimes shrinking since he took office. Sottile and former Police Chief Gerald Keller, who retired at the end of October, have said the statistics show serious crime in the city has plummeted during the past decade.

?People wanted me to make decisions based on perception, but I made decisions based on reality in keeping people safe, not on perceptions,? Sottile said.

Sottile calls regrettable a scandal that rocked the city police department earlier this year with the indictment of former Detective Lt. Timothy Matthews on multiple charges stemming from Matthews? alleged theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars in public money.

?It was a very difficult time,? Sottile said.

He said there have been anxious moments as well ? none greater than when New Jersey-based white supremacist Hal Turner held a rally in Kingston in November 2005 in response to an assault on a white Kingston High School student by a black youth.

The demonstration on Broadway, between the school and City Hall, drew more counterdemonstrators than Turner supporters and went off without any violence or arrests.

?It was humbling to have this community come together and have them hear my pleas to stay away, and they did,? Sottile said. ?You just had to stay focused and solid as a rock. You couldn?t show any weakness.?

There also have been some embarrassments during Sottile?s time in office, notably a sexual harassment suit filed against the city by three female employees of the city Department of Public Works.

The women alleged improper treatment in the workplace based on their gender, and a federal jury agreed, finding in favor of two of the three plaintiffs and awarded them a total of $85,000 in damages.

Sottile said his wife, Mary Beth, and son, Jamie, have been a strong source of support.

?I am appreciative of my family,? Sottile said.

The mayor also said he will never forget his time at the city?s helm.

?It is an experience that I will always remember and always be grateful for,? he said.

Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya decries Nigeria church attacks

BEIRUT: Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya denounced Tuesday recent attacks claimed by Boko Haram on churches in Nigeria that led to the killing of over two dozen people.

?[We] condemn these attacks and consider the victims to be innocent souls that should not have been attacked in any shape or form. These acts are unacceptable in Islam as in all other heavenly religions,? Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya said in a statement.

On Christmas Day Sunday, Boko Haram, which seeks to impose Sharia law across Nigeria split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims, claimed responsibility for the church attacks. The group claimed responsibility for similar attacks on Christmas last year.

Rights groups say over 250 people have been killed by Boko Haram since July 2010.

Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya urged Nigerians to open channels of dialogue and said instability in the country would only benefit the ?global Zionist colonizer.?

Suicide bomber kills 7 outside Iraq ministry (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? At least seven people were killed when a suicide car bomber hit Iraq's interior ministry on Monday in the latest attack since a crisis erupted between the Shi'ite-led government and Sunni leaders a week ago.

Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki sought the arrest of the Sunni vice president last Monday and asked parliament to fire his own Sunni deputy, triggering turmoil that threatens new sectarian strife just after the last U.S. troops withdrew.

The blast occurred when the bomber drove his vehicle into a security cordon outside the ministry in central Baghdad, detonating an explosion that left dead and wounded on the ground and set fire to nearby vehicles, police said.

A senior police source said authorities believed insurgents were targeting the interior ministry because of the announcement of the arrest warrant for Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, charged with running death squads.

Taped confessions of suspects the ministry said were Hashemi's bodyguards were aired on state-run Iraqiya television and other local media on Monday and linked the vice president to killings and attacks on Iraqi government and security officials.

"This is a direct message to us because we are the ones who arrested Tareq al-Hashemi's network and we are the ones who should preserve security in the country," said Ali al-Quraishi, a police lieutenant who monitors checkpoints around Baghdad.

The attack on Bab al-Sharji street followed a wave of explosions on Thursday, including one suicide car bomb and multiple roadside bombs, in mainly Shi'ite areas across the capital in which at least 72 people were killed.

Seven people, including five policemen, were killed and 34 others, including seven policemen, were wounded in the attack on the interior ministry, police and hospital sources said.

"When I went outside I found my colleagues, some of them were killed, others were on the ground, many cars were burned, the policeman on the watchtower looked like he was killed when he was hit in the head," Zaid Raheem, a police guard, said.

The ministry said in a statement that a suicide car bomber had attacked the entrance to its headquarters and killed 3 people and wounded 33.

Hashemi has left Baghdad for semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, where he is unlikely to be handed over to central government officials immediately.

The turmoil threatens to scuttle an uneasy power-sharing government that splits posts among the Shi'ite National Alliance coalition, the mostly Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc and the Kurdish political movement.

CABINET MEETING

A weekly cabinet meeting, expected on Tuesday, is seen as the key test for how the crisis develops, and tensions could rise further if government ministers from Iraqiya decide to boycott the meeting.

Iraqiya lawmakers have already suspended their participation in parliament, which is in recess, though a statement from the party on Sunday said it was willing to take part in talks to try to solve the crisis.

Maliki has warned Hashemi's Iraqiya bloc they face exclusion from power if they walk out on his ruling coalition.

The Sunni minority have felt marginalized since the rise of the Shi'ite majority after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, and many Sunnis feel the political deal has pushed them aside.

Turmoil in Iraq would have a wider impact in a region where a crisis in neighboring Syria is taking on a more sectarian tone and Shi'ite Iran, Turkey and Sunni Arab Gulf states are jockeying for influence.

U.S. officials, diplomats and Iraqi politicians have been in talks to end the dispute that threatens to push Iraq back into the kind of sectarian violence that took the OPEC member to the edge of civil war a few years ago.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke on Sunday with Maliki and Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani about the spat, urging dialogue among leaders, and expressing condolences over violence in Baghdad.

Biden played a diplomatic role during the U.S. military's departure from Iraq, travelling to the country and discussing signs of rising sectarian tension with Iraqi leaders.

U.S. forces withdrew fully from Iraq after almost nine years on December 18.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland has been suspended for three games for an illegal check to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger, the NHL announced on Thursday. Less than nine minutes into Pittsburgh?s 3-2 win on Tuesday, Engelland launched himself into Kruger, driving his forearm to the head of the Chicago forward. Kruger suffered a concussion from the hit. No penalty was assessed on the play, but right after the hit, Blackhawks enforcer John Scott fought Engelland and received an instigator penalty on top of his fighting major and the Penguins scored on the ensuing power play. Engelland will forfeit more than US$9,000 of his salary, which will go to the Players? Emergency Assistance Fund.

Atletico fire Manzano

Atletico Madrid put Gregorio Manzano out of his misery on Thursday when their unpopular board sacked the coach following the King?s Cup defeat by third-tier Albacete and offered Diego Simeone his job. The 55-year-old Manzano?s departure came after less than a half-season in his second stint at the helm, while former Atletico midfielder Simeone said he was ready to take over after quitting as coach of Racing Club in his native Argentina on Tuesday. Club president Enrique Cerezo told reporters the 42-year-old Simeone, a fan favorite as a player, was enthusiastic about their offer and the club were expecting his response by yesterday. ?We have only made an offer to Simeone,? Cerezo added. Known as ?the professor,? Manzano has overseen an erratic campaign including a 5-0 league drubbing at Barcelona.

Villarreal promote Molina

Villarreal have promoted former Spain goalkeeper Jose Francisco Molina from B team coach to take charge of the first team following the dismissal of Juan Carlos Garrido, the La Liga club said on Thursday. Villarreal were humbled 2-0 at home by third-tier Mirandes in the King?s Cup on Wednesday, losing the last-32 match 3-1 on aggregate and prompting president Fernando Roig to sack Garrido immediately after the final whistle. He leaves the side hovering just above the La Liga relegation places after 16 rounds of a stuttering campaign that also saw them beaten in all six of their Champions League Group A games, scoring just two goals and conceding 14. Molina, 41, who kept goal for Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Deportivo Coruna, has agreed a contract until the end of the season, the club said on their Web site.

NZ name assistant coach

World champions New Zealand have named former Waikato Chiefs supremo Ian Foster as assistant coach. Foster, who coached the New Zealand Super rugby side in more than 100 matches between 2004 and this year, will assist recently appointed head coach Steve Hansen, who has been tasked with sustaining the top-ranked side?s success following Graham Henry?s retirement. Foster replaces former assistant coach Wayne Smith, who stepped aside to take up a coaching consultant role with the Chiefs. ?This is a great honor to work with the All Blacks. I?m thankful for the faith that Steve Hansen and the board have shown in me,? Foster, a former coach of the Junior All Blacks, said in a statement released by the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday. The All Blacks have also named Brian McLean, who was an assistant to Samoa at this year?s World Cup, as defense coach, with a skills coach to be named in the new year.

(AP) ? Thousands of mourners carrying Syrian flags and pictures of the dead took part in a mass funeral Saturday for 44 people killed in twin suicide bombings that targeted intelligence agency compounds in Damascus.

Mourners carried coffins draped in the red, white and black Syrian flags into the eighth-century Omayyad Mosque, where they were placed on the ground for prayers.

"Martyr after martyr, we want nobody but (Bashar) Assad," they shouted in support of the embattled Syrian president.

The government linked Friday's bombings to the uprising against Assad's autocratic rule and blamed the al-Qaida terrorist network. They were the first suicide bombings since the unrest began in mid-March, adding new and ominous dimensions to a conflict that has already brought the country to the brink of civil war.

Striking just moments apart, the attackers used powerful car bombs to target the heavily guarded compounds. The explosions shook the capital, which has been relatively untouched by the uprising, and left mutilated and torn bodies amid rubble, twisted debris and burned cars.

The opposition, however, has questioned the government's account and hinted the regime itself could have been behind the attacks, noting it came a day after the arrival of an advance team of Arab League observers investigating Assad's bloody crackdown of the popular revolt.

The government has long contended that the turmoil in Syria this year is not an uprising by reform-seekers but the work of terrorists and foreign-backed armed gangs.

Women dressed in black wailed Saturday during the funeral procession, which was aired by state-run Syrian TV. Some blamed the emir of Qatar, seen by supporters of Assad as leading the campaign against the regime.

"Those terrorists are funded by the emir of Qatar to kill innocent people, but they won't succeed," cried Fawakeh Shaqiri, 56, who was dressed in black and carrying a Syrian flag.

All the coffins Saturday held the names of the bombing victims, except for six coffins carrying the remains of people who had not been identified.

Syrian officials said a suicide attacker detonated his explosives-laden car as he waited behind a vehicle driven by a retired general who was trying to enter a military intelligence building in Damascus' upscale Kfar Sousa district Friday morning. About a minute later, a second attacker blew up his SUV at the gate of the General Intelligence Agency, the officials said.

Government officials took the Arab League observers to the scene of the explosions and said it supported their accounts of who was behind the violence.

Friday's blasts came as the government escalated its crackdown this week ahead of the arrival of the Arab League observers. More than 200 people were killed in two days, including in an attack Tuesday in which activists and witnesses said troops pounded more than 100 fleeing villagers trapped in a valley with shells and gunfire, killing all of them.

The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have been killed since March, when the uprising began and the regime responded by deploying tanks and troops to crush protests across Syria.

AMD Radeon HD 7970 review roundup: supremely fast, relatively efficient

AMD's next flagship graphics card was only announced a few hours ago, and it won't arrive on the gaming public's plate until January, but already the tech punditry has tasted it, tested it and spat out a soggy little piece of paper that reads: "the fastest single-GPU card in the world." What we're really looking for, though, is the type of performance that beats older rivals like NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 580 without blowing the house up like a dual-GPU product. As it turns out, most reviewers agree that is exactly what this new $549 Radeon delivers, albeit with the few caveats summarized after the break.

Gabrielle Giffords on Death, Marriage and a New Normal: 'I Nearly Died. That Drew Us Much Closer' (Time.com)

There was much to hate about politics this year, especially the amount of hate that seemed to poison it. But if there was an antidote, it came from one of the victims: Gabrielle Giffords, vibrant and valiant member of Congress from Arizona, gunned down when a deranged shooter outside a supermarket put a bullet through her brain. That she survived at all was a miracle; that she recovers ? slowly, stubbornly, each day a search for another word, another milestone ? is a model. "You have to have hope and faith," she says at the end of Gabby, the book she wrote with her husband and fellow warrior against all odds and expectations, astronaut Mark Kelly. "I will get stronger. I will return." She answered our questions by e-mail.

Writing such an honest book is an act of bravery. Was it hard for you to relive the events this year in order to write it?
It was really hard to relive those days. At times it was a bit scary.

What do you remember about the shooting?
I don't remember anything.

Mark waited a while to tell you how many other people were hurt or killed in the shooting. Did you realize that even before you were told?
I had no idea. I didn't even know what happened to me. I didn't know I was shot until I was told.

Do you think what happened to you was partly the result of the bitter divisions in the country or entirely the act of a disturbed individual?
Politics has been very nasty recently, but this was clearly a sick person.

President Obama went to see you several times after the shooting. What did you talk about?
First time he visited, I was in a coma. Other time I saw him, I was in Florida before Mark launched into space. I don't remember what we talked about, but it was probably about my recovery and rehab. He did say he wanted me back in Congress.

You have to decide by May whether you're going to run for Congress again. Have you come to any decision yet? What are the factors likely to affect your decision?
No decision yet. The main factor is whether I feel like I can do the job.

What's an average day like for you these days?
Busy, busy, busy. Stretching at 6:30 a.m. Up at 7 a.m. Breakfast and read the Arizona Daily Star, Arizona Republic and New York Times. Drive to rehab at 8 a.m. Physical, occupational and speech therapy for most of the day. Home, dinner and watch The Daily Show. Then off to bed.

Are you religious? If so, did that help you through this experience?
Yes, I am. Of course it did.

You have two stepdaughters, Claire and Claudia. Your book says your relationship with them has improved this year. Why?
I nearly died. That drew us much closer together.

Outside of your family, who are the people who have inspired you most as you work toward recovery?
Our veterans who fight every day to recover from their injuries. My friends Jimmy Hatch and Brian Kolfage inspire me. They were injured in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What was it like to go back to Washington for the debt-ceiling vote?
Overwhelming, but I enjoyed it. Was nice to see my colleagues and the Vice President.

When you think of your future, what do you imagine for yourself?
I try to take one day at a time. I'm hopeful for the future.

Adam Lambert Arrested for Assault in Finland

Adam Lambert has reportedly been arrested in Finland.

Details are still coming in, but this much we know, according to a Perez Hilton source:

The ex-American Idol finalist got into a "huge fight" with boyfriend Sauli Koskinen outside of a bar in Helsinki called "Don't Tell Momma." Both were booked by local police and, as of early this morning, are sitting in separate jails in the area.

Finnish journalists claim that witnesses attempted to break up the brawl, only for Lambert to also attack the peace-makers. No one was seriously injured in the melee.

We'll have more on this arrest as news breaks. Lambert, meanwhile, is in the process of promoting the first single off his second album.

Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy Linked with Increased Cancer Risk

People with myotonic muscular dystrophy may be more likely than people in the general population to develop certain types of cancer. These results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Myotonic muscular dystrophy (MMD) is the most common form of adult-onset muscular dystrophy. The condition is characterized by progressive muscle wasting and weakness.

Some reports have suggested that people with MMD may have an increased risk of benign and malignant tumors. To further explore this issue, researchers conducted a study among more than 1,600 people who were diagnosed with MMD in Sweden or Denmark between 1977 and 2008. The cancer risk in the study participants was compared with the cancer risk in the general population of those countries.

  • 104 MMD patients were diagnosed with cancer during follow-up. In a similar group of people from the general population, only 52 cases of cancer would be expected.
  • Types of cancer that were significantly more common among the MMD patients than among the general population were endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus), brain cancer, ovarian cancer, and colon cancer. Other types of cancer that may be more common among MMD patients include eye cancer, female genital cancer, thyroid cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

These results suggest that people with MMD may have an increased risk of several types of cancer. People with MMD may wish to talk with their doctor about recommended cancer screening tests and other ways to manage their cancer risk.

NYC Sees Drop in Child Obesity, Can Other Cities Do Same? (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- In what might serve as a hopeful sign for all children in the United States, a new study finds that obesity rates among New York City's school children have dropped slightly in the past five years, particularly among the youngest.

Although the relative decline in obesity rates is only 5.5 percent, it's still the largest drop seen yet in any major U.S. city, the researchers noted, and many of the programs that New York City health and education officials implemented to combat rising childhood obesity rates are being tried in other parts of the country.

"This is really good news, but there are still one in five children in grades K-8 who are obese, which is still a huge number of children," said study author Magdalena Berger, a city research scientist in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. "We are on the right track, but we still have a very long way to go."

Obesity among children has been increasing since the 1970s, Berger said. "In the last decade, nationally, we have seen a leveling off of obesity, but this is the first well-documented decline in obesity among children that we have seen."

The drop in obesity is statistically significant, because of the large number of children in New York City's public schools, Berger said. "Whether or not it's actually meaningful is another question," she added.

"I think it's meaningful in the sense that it's not going up, and that's good news, it's not staying stable, and that's good news," Berger said. "I would characterize this as a slow sustained drop over five years; it's not a dramatic drop."

Although the reasons for the decline in obesity among these school children isn't clear, Berger speculated that policies implemented by the New York City departments of health and education, along with more public awareness of the problem, may have played a role.

Study co-author Cathy Nonas, director of Physical Activity and Nutrition Programs in New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, said several changes in city schools probably contributed to the drop in obesity rates.

"There are significant changes in school food," she said. "There is no whole milk in the schools anymore, it's only 1 percent and the chocolate milk is skim and low sugar," she said. "That saved 4.5 billion calories, just by making that change."

In addition, food served in schools has reduced fat and no trans fats and reduced salt, and the level of fiber has been increased, Nonas said. Drinks and snack foods sold in schools are also healthier, she said. Similar policies were also instituted in early child-care centers, she added.

Also, the city has trained K-5 teachers on how to increase physical activity in the classroom, Nonas said.

"It's a layering effect" that all contributed to reducing obesity rates, Nonas believes. These and similar policies are being implemented throughout the country, she noted.

The report was published in the Dec. 16 issue of the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

For the study, Berger's team used data on the more than 900,000 children in kindergarten to eighth grade in New York City public schools. The city's school system collects fitness data on these students every year, Berger said.

The researchers found the relative obesity for these children, aged 5 through 14, dropped 5.5 percent, from 21.9 percent in 2006-07 to 20.7 percent in 2010-11.

The biggest drop was among children aged 5 to 6, where the relative decline was 10 percent, from 20.2 percent in 2006-07 to 18.2 percent in 2010-11, they noted.

These declines in obesity were seen in all race and ethnic groups, the researchers added.

Obesity expert Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center at Yale University School of Medicine, said that "this report, showing a decline in obesity among New York City school children over the past five years is, to be sure, a glass half full. But I wouldn't get carried away with the celebrations just yet."

The absolute decline in the overall obesity rate is roughly 1 percent in five years, he noted. "At that rate of progress, it would take a century to fully reverse the damage done over the past several decades. The rate of obesity is still over 20 percent, and the gains are uneven."

This is a window to a very small part of a nationwide obesity problem, Katz added. "The resources of New York City may be sufficient to produce some good news, but that is not generalizable. We have a long way to go, and will need to build diligently on these modest gains to get there," he said.

"Obesity is still a major health issue in children," Dr. Achiau Ludomirsky, chief of pediatric cardiology at NYU Langone Medical Center, New York City, added in a statement. "We can definitely see that the decline in obesity among [New York City] school children is the result of early intervention for better diet, opportunity for physical fitness and the education of students and parents. It is a three-tier effect."

What kids eat and learn away from school is also key. "We can't reduce obesity levels without working closely with the families of students to help them offer better diet options at home and limit a child's time in front of the television, computers and video games," Ludomirsky said.

"But we still have a long way to go," he stressed. "If we don't address the childhood obesity epidemic more proactively right now, it will become a major health issue for the next generation of Americans."
